Santa Fe Planned Parenthood scheduled to reopen

Planned Parenthood is scheduled to reopen in Santa Fe, New Mexico, after closing in January 2025 due to a lack of staff.

Key Takeaways:

  • Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains announced its facility in Santa Fe will reopen in May.

  • The facility shut down in January 2025 due to staffing shortages.

The Details:

Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains announced that it will be reopening its location in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where there are no limits on abortion. It had been running telehealth operations since the facility closed over a year ago due to a staffing shortage. It has hired a health center manager and a nurse practitioner for the facility, which is located on St. Michael's Drive. It is also actively hiring and training new employees.

President and CEO Adrienne Mansanares said the facility plans to open its doors to patients in May.

Zoom Out:

According to the Guttmacher Institute, New Mexico has become an abortion tourism state, with abortions increasing from 5,000 per year (prior to the fall of Roe v. Wade in 2022) to 18,000 a year.

“The vast majority of traveling patients from Texas are coming to New Mexico and to Colorado,” Mansanares said.

Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains also expanded its facility in Albuquerque after 2022 and plans to open a second facility in Albuquerque by the end of 2026.

The Bottom Line:

Planned Parenthood has been closing numerous facilities, often blaming it on pro-life laws. In reality, this is an expected part of a part of a larger restructuring plan put in place years ago.

The abortion giant is looking to capitalize on the increase of telehealth abortions, while minimizing the costs associated with brick-and-mortar facilities. The main focus has become telehealth — including the mailing of abortion pills — through its so-called “Virtual Health Centers (VHCs).”
