Premature babies celebrate their first Christmases with style
Premature babies across the country have gotten into the Christmas spirit with adorable outfits shared on social media.
In Louisville, Kentucky, preemies in the UofL’s NICU were the stars of a photoshoot planned by NICU nurse Melanie Keefe.
In Colorado, babies were dressed up as gingerbread men, stockings, and elves and got a visit from Santa. The festivities are put together by the Celebration Committee, a group of NICU nurses, support staff, and volunteers.
“It’s challenging to spend the holiday season in the NICU, and providing a semblance of normalcy for families by dressing up their little ones for the occasion is so special. Celebrating these tiny fighters creates cherished memories for families that honor their babies’ strength and resilience,” said Erin Havrilla, MSN, clinical nurse manager in the NICU.

At Christus St. Elizabeth in Texas, babies were swaddled up like snowmen and presents to celebrate their first Christmases.
In Michigan, at Hurley Children’s Hospital, got an early visit from Santa. The Hurley Foundation Volunteer Corps dressed the babies up in cute Christmas attire and welcomed a surprise guest too.

“Who let the Grinch in there? It’s okay, with the beauty of these Hurley babies, his heart grew three sizes this day,” the hospital said.
In Memphis, at Regional One Health, tiny babies were dressed in festive hats that were crocheted by the aunt of one of the NICU nurses. Over at St. Francis Hospital, babies were dressed up for a fun Christmas photoshoot.
“We want to create joy and memories for our NICU families,” said Kerry Thompson, NICU nurse at St. Francis who helped to choose the costumes and took the photos. “the last few years that we have been dressing the babies up for various holidays has been an uplifting experience for our staff and the parents. Inserting a spurt of fun and whimsical humor into what can be a stressful time for families really has an immeasurable impact.”
