Powerful spoken-word poem shows baby’s love for mother

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger / so just hold on a little longer / please just hear me…”

There are many songs and poems in which the narrator is a pre-born baby, pleading with his or her mother to not choose abortion. One of the most emotional, powerful, and touching of these is a poem titled “Mommy Can You Hear Me.”

My friend Joanna recently sent me a video of this spoken word poem, which was performed at the Urban Word Poetry Slam.

In this poem, the pre-born baby consoles her mother, who has been the victim of terrible abuses at the hands of strangers, a boyfriend and his rapist friends, and her stepfather. The narrator’s diction and delivery are extraordinary.
