Melania Trump announces expansion of savings accounts for foster youth

First Lady Melania Trump announced last week the launch of dedicated savings accounts for children in foster care. The initiative expands the "Trump accounts" — savings accounts for children — established by the President.

Key Takeaways:

  • First Lady Melania Trump has announced Fostering the Future accounts, an expansion of Trump accounts for foster youth.

  • Trump accounts are tax-deferred savings accounts created specifically for children under age 18.

  • Governors in 23 states have promised to set up the accounts for children in their states' care.

The Details:

Melania Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the new accounts, called Fostering the Future Accounts, on June 11. Under the initiative, states will be allowed to open Trump accounts on behalf of children currently in foster care.

Trump accounts are tax-deferred savings accounts created specifically for children under age 18. The accounts were announced last year under President Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill."

Never miss the latest news in the fight for life.

“Fostering the Future Accounts give foster children the same chance for asset ownership and long-term wealth building as every other American child. By investing in our foster youth now, we help strengthen America’s workforce, communities, and economic future,” the First Lady said.

“We are embedding foster youth into the fabric of this program from the outset,” Bessent explained. “When Trump Accounts launch on July 4, every eligible child in America will be able to participate, including those for whom the state serves as a legal guardian.”

According to a White House press release, governors in 23 states have thus far promised to set up the accounts for children in their states' care.

Zoom In:

The announcement comes as part of the Trump administration's “Fostering the Future” initiative to help those in foster care and to provide better career and educational support for foster youth. In advance of that initiative last year, the First Lady announced a $25 million investment to help secure housing for young people transitioning out of foster care.

According to federal data, there are more than 400,000 children in foster care, many of whom are considered financially vulnerable.

The Bottom Line:

Foster children are an at-risk population, and they need help and support. Any initiative designed to better the lives of these children should be supported.
