Man in Ireland sentenced to prison for forcing abortion drugs on pregnant woman

A man in Ireland who forced his girlfriend to take abortion drugs, killing her preborn child, has been sentenced to nine years in prison.

Key Takeaways:

  • Adeleke Adelani forced his girlfriend to abort her preborn child with abortion drugs in February 2020.

  • Adelani locked his victim in a room and threatened to beat her child out of her if she did not take the drugs.

  • She suffered both physical and emotional side effects as a result of the assault.

  • Adelani was sentenced to 11 years in prison, with two years suspended.

The Details:

Adeleke Adelani pleaded guilty to unlawfully ending the life of a fetus after he forced his girlfriend to take five abortion tablets before locking her in a room on Valentine's Day in 2020. His girlfriend had taken "abortion tablets" a year prior in 2019 when she became pregnant by Adelani for the first time — a reportedly mutual decision.

According to RTE, this time, Adelani forced his girlfriend to take the drugs. She was nine weeks pregnant, and he threatened to beat the child out of her if she did not take the drugs.

RTE reported, "The court was told that the man forced the woman to take five misoprostol 200mg tablets, told her how to swallow them and then locked her in a bedroom."

Misoprostol is a drug utilized in the abortion pill regimen along with the drug mifepristone; however, misoprostol is also sometimes used an abortion drug alone. It causes contractions to expel the preborn child from the womb.

The victim called authorities after she took the pills. Police seized Adelani's phone as part of their investigation, but it wasn't until four years later that they were able to unlock and access its files, where the found internet searches on how to conduct an at-home abortion, as well as audio recording of Adelani threatening his victim.

In the recording, Adelani said:

I'm showing you what to do... take this... I’m dead serious... I’m forcing you. I don’t care, take it.

"It’s either you eat this or I beat that kid out of you tonight. I’m dead serious...I’m forcing you. I don’t care. Take it."

During Adelani's trial, the court heard that the woman experienced distressing side effects as a result of taking the misoprostol abortion drug. RTE reports:

Evidence was given how the woman became unwell after she was forced to take the tablets. She came down with a fever, she was shivering and she also had cramps.

She went to the toilet at one stage, and she was passing large clots of blood, and she was in great pain, the court was told.

Judge John Aylmer sentenced Adelani to 11 years in prison, with two years suspended, saying, "It’s quite difficult to contemplate a more serious offence contrary to this statutory provision.”

Zoom In:

The victim told the court that, as well as experiencing physical side effects, she was also deeply traumatized by the death of her preborn child:

"When he wrongfully imprisoned me and caused the termination of my nine-week pregnancy, he took far more than my freedom. He took my child. He took my sense of safety. He took a future that I had already begun to plan and love. My baby was real to me. I had hopes, dreams, and a bond with the life that was growing inside me, and all of it was violently stolen from me in a moment of cruelty that I will never forget."

The woman also told the court that she has forgiven Adelani and found healing in Christ:

"I have forgiven the defendant. The forgiveness does not mean what he did was acceptable. It means I refuse to let what he did continue to control my heart and my life. Through healing and faith, I opened my heart again. I found love not only in my amazing husband, who treats me with the love, dignity and kindness I always deserved, but in Christ, who carried me when I could not carry myself...

I will always grieve my child. I will always remember what was taken from me. Healing does not erase the loss, it only means I learned how to live with it."

The Bottom Line:

The widespread promotion and availability of abortion drugs means that predatory men like Adelani have easier access to coerce women and force abortions that these women do not want. As long as the abortion industry pushes these pills as an easy and accessible option, women will continue to be injured while their preborn children are ruthlessly killed.
