Man cancels assisted suicide plans after groundbreaking treatment
A cancer patient suffering unbearable side effects had planned to go to Switzerland for assisted suicide, but canceled his plans after doctors were able to cure his condition with an experimental treatment.
Professor Yuval Tal gave a presentation featuring a cancer patient who was suffering itching so unbearable that he planned to undergo assisted suicide.
Doctors worked to address his problem by using an experimental treatment, which worked.
Afterwards, the man canceled his assisted suicide plans.
Yuval Tal, a director of the Immunology and Allergy Unit at Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center, gave a Ynet presentation on a cancer patient who planned to go to Switzerland to undergo assisted suicide.
The man had experienced years of severe itching, even though his cancer was in remission.
"The condition came to dominate his life: He barely slept, struggled to function and suffered around the clock. Antihistamines, steroids and other standard treatments brought no relief," Tal said. "Eventually, overwhelmed by the pain, he bought a ticket to Switzerland to seek assisted death — not because of the cancer, but because of the itching."
Tal explained that doctors didn't simply accept the man's plan to end his life; instead, they sought to address the problem through actual health care:
"Doctors therefore considered the role of cytokines linked to type 2 inflammation. These proteins allow immune cells to communicate and trigger inflammatory responses.
The same pathway is known to play a central role in conditions such as asthma and atopic dermatitis. Based on this understanding, doctors tried a biological therapy targeting the same immune pathway, even though it had not been developed for cancer-related itching.
After just three injections, the patient improved dramatically. The relentless itching that had tormented him around the clock disappeared."
Because of this, the patient canceled his plans to kill himself through assisted suicide. The success of the treatments also inspired doctors to launch a formal research project to help others with similar suffering.
It is not unusual in countries where assisted suicide and euthanasia are legal for people suffering from untreated illnesses to feel their only choice is to die, simply because they cannot access treatment.
For example, Live Action News previously reported on the case of a woman named Gwen (a pseudonym), who lives in constant pain:
Gwen was born with Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a disorder which affects connective tissue due to defects in collagen production.
Additionally, Gwen is autistic, has ADHD, and also has Multiple Chemical Sensitivity; a car accident also caused her to experience chronic extreme pain. Gwen needs a wheelchair, but has been on a waiting list for over two years to receive one, and uses a walker in the meantime.
The Canadian health care system denied the treatment doctors had recommended for her, and she couldn't afford to pay for it out of pocket. That led Gwen to feel like her only option was assisted suicide.
“I don’t want to die, but when you’re in that much pain, these intrusive thoughts come up,” she said. “The suffering is so far beyond what anyone can fathom.”
As Live Action News pointed out, Gwen is far from alone:
One woman, for example, sought MAiD because of financial difficulties following complications from COVID-19. A 20-year-old man was approved for MAiD due to years of medical mismanagement. Yet another woman, like Gwen, sought MAiD due to chemical sensitivities, though she was able to get help in time to save her life. Another woman is considering assisted suicide because it has taken years to get a much-needed surgery which would relieve her pain and improve her quality of life.
People who feel they have no other choice but death deserve to be given access to the best medical treatment available to address their symptoms and give them hope for a better future.
