John Kasich: Pro-lifers should set aside their pro-life beliefs for the sake of unity
Former GOP presidential candidate and past Ohio Governor John Kasich appeared on “The View” this week, speaking with Meghan McCain about his belief that it is time for pro-lifers to set aside their pro-life beliefs for the sake of societal unity.
The exchange, which begins at approximately 4:10 in the following video, began with McCain discussing her reluctance to vote for candidates who do not share her pro-life beliefs. “You’re pro-life, and I know that. You were pro-life in politics, as am I,” McCain said. “It’s a big part of who I am and my platform, and I don’t think taxpayers should be funding abortions for women who are as pregnant as I am right now. How would you push back against a voter like me who’s concerned about things like this in a possible Biden-Harris administration?”
Kasich responded, “I disagree with Joe Biden in a number of areas. I don’t like some of what he’s talking about in capital gains taxes. But the issues here are dwarfed, in my opinion, by the fact that he’s a person that can pull us together,” he said. “So do I think that if he wins, that all of a sudden, all these things are going to happen that are negative? No, I don’t believe that at all because that’s not his character. That is not who he is.”
Kasich then continued by invoking Biden’s notoriously close relationship with McCain’s father, the late John McCain, who passed away in 2018 after a battle with brain cancer. “As you know, your father and Joe were great friends,” Kasich said. “Why? Not because they agreed on everything, but they could find common ground. So do I think we’re going to end up in some cataclysmic place if he wins? I don’t, but I do believe four more years of this division is wrecking the very soul of our country, and we continue down this path, I don’t know how we come back.”
In his response, Kasich essentially equated disagreement on something such as “capital gains taxes” to disagreement about the grave human rights violation of killing human beings in the womb, calling both “issues [that] are dwarfed” by a perceived need to “pull us together.”
Live Action founder and President Lila Rose vehemently disagreed with Kasich’s statement on Twitter:
There is no way to “pull us together” when your candidate supports the slaughter of preborn children Period.
What a disgrace. @JohnKasich

Kasich’s comments are likely unsurprising to many pro-lifers. Though he claims to be pro-life, he has frequently set aside his own espoused pro-life convictions. In 2019, Kasich stepped down as governor of Ohio, and one of his final acts was to veto a bill banning abortion after a preborn child’s heartbeat can be detected. In fact, he vetoed the ‘heartbeat bill’ not once, but twice, while he signed a ban on D&E abortions in the state. Kasich also granted Planned Parenthood a waiver, allowing a Cincinnati facility to commit abortions despite not having a hospital transfer agreement as required by state law.
Kasich also previously complained that he feels some politicians (in particular, Republicans) “focus too much” on the legalized killing of preborn children through abortion.
