Argentina’s President Javier Milei slams abortion as a ‘tragedy’
Javier Milei, the president of Argentina, recently spoke at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he slammed abortion and reaffirmed his commitment to protecting life.
In his speech, Milei condemned those who claim that “we human beings damage the planet, which should be protected at all costs, even going as far as advocating for population control mechanisms or the tragedy of abortion.” He further noted that these ideas have gained popularity in numerous spheres.
“Unfortunately, these harmful ideas have taken a stronghold in our society,” he said. “Neo-Marxists have managed to co-opt the common sense of the Western world, and this they have achieved by appropriating the media, culture, universities and also international organizations.”
Milei’s speech was praised by Elon Musk on X (formerly known as Twitter). He shared video of the speech, and noted it was a “[g]ood explanation of what makes countries more or less prosperous.”
Milei was elected last November and openly ran on a platform of protecting life. In an interview before his election, he spoke with Tucker Carlson about how his position as a libertarian was not in conflict with the pro-life movement.
“As a libertarian, we believe that liberalism entails the unrestricted respect for the lives of others, rooted in a principle of non-aggression, and the defense of life, liberty, and property. And if we cleave these ideas of liberty, one of the most fundamental aspects is to defend the right to life.”
He continued, “It’s the fact that life begins at conception. It’s at that very instant that a new being begins to evolve with its own unique DNA.”
Abortion was legalized in Argentina in 2020 by the Argentinian congress, with Milei’s predecessor, Alberto Fernandez, further overseeing legislation that legalized abortion. Currently, abortion is legal through 14 weeks of pregnancy for any reason, and after 14 weeks in cases of rape or risk to the mother’s health.
