Human Matters with Sami Parker: The true effects of birth control

Human Matters, a new show powered by Live Action and hosted by Sami Parker, will delve into honest conversations about some of the most important topics and trends in society today.

In her first video, Parker explores a topic that has been at the center of many conversations regarding women's health in the last 60 years: birth control.

Key Takeaways:

  • Live Action's Sami Parker explores pertinent trends and topics in her new show, Human Matters.

  • In her first episode, she tackles the topic of birth control.

  • Parker explains how birth control isn't the band-aid it's been sold to be, and makes the case that avoiding birth control is actually best for women.

The Details:

Parker opens sharing a scenario that almost every woman has experienced: she goes to the doctor with a medical question or concern, and the doctor suggests birth control as a band-aid solution.

"And if your doctor didn't tell you to try birth control, then your mom was probably the one to do that. In high school, it was 'Don't be sexually active, but like just in case you are, here's some birth control,'" Parker says.

She goes on to explore why birth control is not the cure-all it's often portrayed to be, sharing several social media clips of women who describe feeling liberated once going off the pill. There is, she explains, a reason that women feel so different once their bodies aren't being negatively affected by hormonal birth control.

She then dives into the details, referencing Dr. Sarah Hill's book, "This Is Your Brain on Birth Control."

"If you are a woman, you have to read that book," she says. "Fair warning: your jaw will be on the floor the entire time."

The book — and Parker — explore what birth control actually does to a woman's body, and why it causes the side effects it does.

"It affects your motivation, your emotions, your relationships, how you communicate with people," Parker explains. "It even affects who you are attracted to."

"Studies show that women are generally more satisfied, sexually, emotionally, relationally, when they're off the pill," she notes. "And yet a good, obedient feminist" is expected to take it regardless of the risks or side effects, which are frequently downplayed.

The Bottom Line:

Ultimately, Parker says, the birth control industry has sold society the lie that it's "what allowed us to finally get out of the house and do something important."

"How insulting," Parker says. "As if raising children and shaping the next generation of people isn't one of the most important and impressive tasks on earth."
