Women discuss suffering forced abortions: ‘They strapped me down’

In a Yelp review for a Planned Parenthood abortion facility in Massachusetts, a woman named Elizabeth claimed that clinic workers forced abortion on her. There is no way to verify her claims, but she said while the staff was nice they didn’t allow her to back out of the abortion when she changed her mind. Unfortunately, Elizabeth is not alone and stories of forced abortion are more common than people realize.

“The staff where [sic] really nice, but when I was there I told them that I couldn’t go through with the procedure and they told me I signed the paperwork so they were going to do it anyway,” wrote Elizabeth. “Now I’m getting admitted to a hospital for having pregnancy tissue still in my uterus and an infection because of dirty tools.”

Of course, there is no way to be sure this review is genuine. But if it is, this is not the only time abortion workers have forced women into abortions.

The pro-life organization Save the Storks recently shared the story of another woman who had a forced abortion at Planned Parenthood after telling the staff she didn’t want to go through with it. First, she had a sonogram. She reported that the sonogram screen was turned away from her so she couldn’t see her baby. On the abortion table, she began to cry:

They asked me what was wrong, and I told them that I did not want to do this. I had changed my mind…

The doctor began to tell me that I didn’t need a baby and that I had my whole life ahead of me.

I began to cry harder, and they strapped me down. I asked them to please unstrap me and let me leave. The anesthesia was administered, and I fell asleep to the sound of their laughter. When I woke up, I was hurting physically as well as emotionally. All around me were the sounds of other women sobbing.

Another woman told the story of her late-term abortion on LiveJournal. It was done by D&E (Dilation and Evacuation) abortion. A D&E takes two days to carry out. On the first day, the abortionist inserts sticks called laminaria into a woman’s body to dilate her cervix. The next day, the baby is dismembered and extracted with forceps. Former abortionist Dr. Anthony Levatino describes the procedure in the video below:

2nd Trimester Surgical Abortion: Dilation and Evacuation (D & E)

When she went to have the laminaria inserted, the intense, unexpected pain caused her to cry. She explained:

My nurse was pretty cold, and she told me to stop crying and that it would only make things worse.

I pleaded for them to stop and told them I didn’t want to do it anymore but since I had signed the consent form they proceeded. I started freaking out when they told me they would put a needle into my cervix but I wasn’t looking and when they did it I just felt a little pain. I must have sworn because the nurse got a little miffed. What hurt the most was being open by some metal thing. I was hyperventilating and all the nurse said was, “You got yourself into this” and “stop making this harder for yourself”.

The traumatized woman cried all the way back to the motel where she was staying. That night, she endured more cramps from the forced abortion. But the next morning, the pain was even worse:

I was screaming and moaning for nearly an hour. Finally, I called 911 and had the paramedics come. A woman explained to me I was in premature labour. All I could do was cry and moan, “It’s hurting me, It hurts”. It was definately [sic] the worst pain I have EVER felt in my life. The paramedics called a taxi and he drove my boyfriend and I to the clinic.

I got to the clinic and waited in that damn room for nearly twenty minutes. I was moaning, clutching onto the chair with my head tilted back and breathing heavily.

At the abortion facility, the woman was given Ativan and other drugs, which put her into an intoxicated state:

In no time I was relaxed and when they inserted the IV in, I didn’t have a care in the world … Even though I felt pain I was so relaxed it didn’t both me…

I went to recovery and tripped out. It felt like 10 minutes, but it must have been two hours. I felt fine the rest of the day and still do.

Despite how traumatic the abortion was, the woman says she is “Happy I did this. No regrets. Pain was nearly unbearable but worth it.”

We don’t know why this woman tried to stop the abortion, whether it was solely due to pain or whether she had second thoughts about aborting her baby. After the fact, she said she doesn’t regret the abortion. Maybe she truly doesn’t, or maybe she’s suffering from denial, which can be a trauma response. Regardless of how she feels now, she was subjected to cruelty by the nurse and doctor, who disregarded her pleas to stop and forced abortion on her.

Catherine Glenn Foster, now president of Americans United for Life, was 19 when she endured her own forced abortion:

I said “please let me up. Let me off this table, out of this room. I don’t want this anymore.” I said, “I can’t do this. This is wrong and I feel really bad about this. Just let me go. You can keep the money.” And they shouted for more people and I had four people holding me down. One – a nurse – and a staff member on each arm. The doctor aborted my child. I’m screaming.

These are just a few of the women who were physically forced into abortions while others have shared that they were pressured to abort. A study published in the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons found that nearly 74% of women who sought post-abortion care admitted they experienced some form of pressure to end their pregnancies.
