Michigan man found guilty of fatally stabbing pregnant girlfriend
A Michigan man has been convicted of fatally stabbing his pregnant girlfriend, killing both her and her preborn child, in 2024.
Damarion Winston Goler fatally stabbed his girlfriend, Talic Mersina, in 2024.
Mersina was 28 weeks pregnant at the time of her death.
Goler was found guilty of second-degree murder, homicide causing death of an unborn fetus, and tampering with evidence in a homicide case.
He is scheduled to be sentenced in early December.
Homicide is a leading cause of death of pregnant women.
On March 24, 2024, police responded to a call regarding "loud screaming" from the neighbor of Damarion Winston Goler, 33, and Talic Mersina, 31, at their apartment in Sterling Heights, Michigan. They found blood both outside and inside the apartment, but a victim was nowhere to be found. They then received a 911 call from another location regarding a man covered in blood. Upon investigating, they found Goler, with an injured Mersina in a car nearby.
Mersina was rushed to the hospital, but both she and her preborn baby were pronounced dead from the stab wounds. She was 28 weeks pregnant at the time of her death.
Goler was taken into custody and has been held without bond since his 2024 arrest.
Goler was charged in the stabbing death of Mersina, and during the two-week trial, Medical Examiner Mary Pietrangelo testified that Mersina had suffered more than 60 “blunt-force” injuries and more than 50 “sharp-force” injuries.
A jury ultimately found Goler guilty of second-degree murder, homicide causing death of an unborn fetus, and tampering with evidence in a homicide case.
“I hope this conviction brings some measure of closure to the victims’ family. The defendant has been held accountable for his actions, but no verdict can undo the tragic loss or erase the pain this family has endured,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.
Sentencing is scheduled for December 3. The charges carry a maximum penalty of life in prison.
Homicide is one of the leading causes of death for pregnant women, and many of these are domestic violence situations. A 2022 article published in the British Medical Journal found that women are “more likely to be murdered during pregnancy or soon after childbirth than to die from the three leading obstetric causes of maternal mortality (hypertensive disorders, haemorrhage, or sepsis).”
