“Planned Parenthood and its Florida operations mislead women about the critical and undeniable risks of a chemical abortion by deceptively claiming these powerful drugs are less risky than everyday pain medication,” the lawsuit reads.

"The ‘safer than Tylenol’ marketing campaign has been ongoing for years and targeted to women in Florida. Just a few weeks ago, Defendant Planned Parenthood Florida Action proclaimed on X.com that ‘Mifepristone is safe. Safer than Tylenol.’ — That claim is manifestly false," said Uthmeier.

The lawsuit seeks estimated damages of $350 million, in addition to asking the court to implement sanctions against Planned Parenthood including requiring the organization to sell off real estate, prohibit it from providing abortions, or order that it be dissolved altogether.

“It is vile that Planned Parenthood cares more about lining their pockets than providing women with factual information about the health risks of chemical abortion drugs,” Uthmeier said in a statement.

Why It Matters:

The abortion pill has, for a number of years now, accounted for the majority of abortions. While the abortion drug's access and popularity have skyrocketed, so too have the number of injuries experienced by women who take the pills. One analysis of hospital data found that adverse events occurred at a rate approximately 22 times higher than the rate reported on the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) label for the drug. Another study found it to be four times more dangerous than a first-trimester surgical abortion. As previously noted by Live Action News:

Recent research from Ireland about the abortion pill showed 12% of women went to the ER for bleeding or infection. In addition, 16% suffered incomplete abortions.

This percentage corresponds with a recent U.S. insurance database analysis from the EPPC, showing a nearly 11% “serious adverse events” rate after taking the abortion pill.

A different study found that women were overwhelmingly unprepared for just how painful the chemical abortion process would be. Side effects may include severe cramping, contractions, and heavy bleeding, as well as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and headaches. Other known risks include incomplete abortion, hemorrhage, infection, and even death.
