A Brooklyn man is the prime suspect in an attack against a pregnant woman inside her apartment.
The suspect and the victim are allegedly married.
The man is alleged to have used rubbing alcohol to start the fire that burned the woman's face, neck, and back.
She is currently in stable condition in the burn unit.
Homicide is a leading cause of death for pregnant women.
According to News 12, the 38-year-old woman was deliberately set on fire in her apartment in Crown Heights.
Police officers responded at about 5 p.m. and found her suffering burns to her face, neck, and back. It is believed that her partner used rubbing alcohol to start the fire.
While police said the suspect is the woman's current or former boyfriend, the victim's mother told News 12 that the suspect is married to the victim.
The woman's family members said the woman is the mother of a young child and is also pregnant. She is reported to be in stable condition in the burn unit.
No arrests have been made, but police say they know who they are looking for.
Homicide is a leading cause of death for pregnant women.
In the U.S., women who are pregnant or have recently given birth are more likely to be murdered than to die from obstetric causes, including hemorrhage and sepsis. These homicides are often linked to domestic violence.
While abortion supporters argue that easy access to abortion will decrease these homicides, this most recent attack took place in New York, where abortion is very accessible.
Men who want women to have abortions sometimes use threats of violence to coerce women to have abortions they don't want.
