President Biden: Protecting preborn humans is part of ‘MAGA Republican’ ‘extremism’

President Biden suggested on Thursday that “MAGA Republicans” embrace an “extreme ideology” that includes opposition to abortion. His comments came during what has been described as a dark speech at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia. In it, he took aim at attempts to challenge the 2020 presidential election results but also called out several other traditionally conservative positions.

“MAGA forces are determined to take this country backwards — backwards to an America where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy, no right to contraception, no right to marry who you love,” he said.

Biden’s comments reflected a history of contradictory stances on abortion and other issues. A little more than a decade ago, Biden supported the Hyde Amendment and said life begins at conception — a position he apparently reversed in recent years. In May, the president notably acknowledged that abortion kills a “child” but has pushed for Congress to codify Roe v. Wade‘s provisions into federal law. As previously reported by Live Action News, a “right to privacy” has never allowed for homicide against an innocent party.

Historically, polling has shown that Americans favor restrictions on abortion. According to Gallup, most tend to support limiting abortion to the first trimester (with 55% opposing second trimester abortions and 71% opposing third trimester abortions).

A series of states has begun putting more protections for preborn human beings in place since the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization reversed Roe v. Wade. A majority of the court, in a 6-3 decision, supported Roe’s reversal with a variety of opinions from the justices. In his concurring opinion, Justice Clarence Thomas argued that the ruling should prompt a reconsideration of substantive due process more generally – including, for example, the decisions in Obergefell v. Hodges and Griswold v. Connecticut.

While that opinion has raised concerns about the stability of decades-old, highly controversial jurisprudence from the Court, Justice Samuel Alito specifically stated on page 66 of the Dobbs decision, “As even the Casey plurality recognized, ‘[a]bortion is a unique act because it terminates ‘life or potential life.’ 505 U. S., at 852; see also Roe, 410 U. S., at 159 (abortion is ‘inherently different from marital intimacy,’ ‘marriage,’ or ‘procreation’). And to ensure that our decision is not misunderstood or mischaracterized, we emphasize that our decision concerns the constitutional right to abortion and no other right.”
