Press Release
·FDA Continues to Delay Needed Action to Protect Women & Children from Abortion Pill
Review of Mifepristone Postponed until March 2027
Washington, D.C. – Live Action, one of the nation’s leading human rights organizations,
reacts to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s court-ordered update on the ongoing safety review of the chemical abortion drug mifepristone. The administration, which has been dragging its feet on a promised review, says the review will now come in March 2027, and has no signs of adjusting the REMS requirements.
Founder and President Lila Rose released the following statement:
“The FDA says it won’t complete its abortion pill safety analysis until March 2027, with no deadline for taking action.
This delay is UNACCEPTABLE. Every day, women are put at risk, and preborn children are killed.
The FDA must pull the abortion pill from the market NOW.”
Chemical abortion accounts for 65 percent of abortions in the United States and has killed more than 7.5 million preborn children since it was approved by the FDA in 2000. Mifepristone, the first drug in the abortion pill regimen, starves a preborn child by blocking progesterone before a second drug, misoprostol, is used to induce labor to deliver a dead baby.
The Ethics & Public Policy Center shared its extensive data on real-life insurance claims last year, showing that 1 in 10 women who take mifepristone end up in the emergency room with severe complications, approximately 22 times more frequent than the FDA currently recognizes. Chemical abortion survivor, Shanyce Thomas, almost died of sepsis after taking the abortion pill.
Another survivor, Catherine Herring was drugged by her husband, who used mifepristone in an attempt to murder his own preborn child. By continuing to allow mifepristone to be dispensed via telehealth and by mail, the FDA is blatantly ignoring the health and safety of the American people.
