Zurich keeps annual March for Life out of city center for sixth consecutive year

For the sixth consecutive year, Zurich city authorities have denied permission for the annual Swiss Marsch fürs Läbe (March for Life) to be held in the city center, re-routing the upcoming September 19 event to the northern outskirts of the city. Pro-life organizers explain the relocation infringes on their fundamental rights to free assembly and public visibility, announcing plans to challenge the decision in court.
Sixth Year of Relocation: Zurich authorities have once again prohibited the March for Life from taking place in the historic city center, directing it to the suburb of Oerlikon.
Legal Challenge Pending: Organizers are filing a court challenge, arguing that relocating the demonstration severely diminishes its visibility and public engagement.
Misdirected Security Concerns: Organizers contend that security threats stem from hostile counter-demonstrators and that police are fully capable of protecting pro-lifers at the event.
Pattern of Restriction: Organizers point out that similar pro-life marches proceed safely in central locations across major European cities like Vienna, Berlin, and Paris.
Zurich authorities cited security concerns and the likelihood of counter-demonstrations as the justification for moving the event to Oerlikon, where it has been held since 2021.
However, Beatrice Gall, president of Marsch fürs Läbe, told CNA Deutch that the city's reasoning "does not address the actual source of the security concerns." Gall emphasized that the March for Life has operated peacefully and legally for 16 years in Switzerland.
She also noted that Zurich City Police's own assessment from last year confirmed officers successfully managed to keep the event safe despite attempts by several dozen counter-demonstrators to disrupt it.
Organizers argue that shifting the march out of the central public square severely undermines their mission to foster pro-life dialogue on pregnancy, abortion, and support for families.
"The visibility of a demonstration is an essential element of the freedoms of assembly and expression," Gall said, adding that an out-of-the-way venue drastically limits public reach and lowers participation.
Gall warned that relocating peaceful events due to potential counter-protests creates a dangerous precedent, making fundamental rights dependent on the willingness of opponents to threaten disruption.
She called the continuous exclusion a "pattern of unequal treatment" compared to other national demonstrations held in Zurich.
Citing European Court of Human Rights jurisprudence, organizers maintain that the threat of counter-demonstrations alone should never justify restricting a peaceful assembly.
The legal dispute now extends beyond event logistics, raising broader constitutional questions about whether pro-life groups in Switzerland receive equal protection under the law for freedom of assembly and expression.
