Vice President and Second Lady announce birth of fourth child
Vice President JD Vance announced the birth of his and Second Lady Usha Vance's fourth child on Sunday.
Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha, have announced the birth of their fourth child, Alec Neel Vance.
Usha and Alec are both said to be "happy and healthy."
According to news reports, this is the first birth to a sitting vice president in more than 150 years.
VP Vance announced the birth of their son, Alec Neel Vance, in a social media post on July 19.
“We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother,” the statement, which was signed by both JD and Usha Vance, said.
The couple also thanked the doctors and staff at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, along with the White House medical team, for their excellent care.
Baby Alec is the fourth child for the couple, joining big siblings Ewan, 9; Vivek, 6; and Mirabel, 4.
According to CNN, this is the first birth to a sitting vice president in more than 150 years. As the outlet reported: "The last time a second lady had a baby while in office was in 1870, when Vice President Schuyler Colfax and his wife, Ellen Maria Colfax, welcomed Schuyler Colfax III, who went on to become the mayor of South Bend, Indiana."
As the vice president, Vance has indicated his support for family life. In January 2026, he spoke to the crowd at the annual March for Life about his wife's pregnancy. As Live Action News reported:
"Some of you may remember that, in my remarks last year, I told you all that one of the things I most wanted in the United States of America was more families, and more babies," he joked lightheartedly. "So let the record show, you have a vice president practices what he preaches! Usha and I announced this week that we are expecting our fourth, and it will be our third baby boy, so we'll take whatever prayers you can give. We certainly need them."
In his recent book, Vance also said that the death of his friend, Charlie Kirk, inspired the couple to have more children.
"Not long after we buried my friend, she became pregnant with our fourth child, a boy," he wrote. "One life was stolen from us, but another was given."
