Nevada woman sentenced for attempted murder of newborn left in trash
A woman was sentenced on Wednesday for attempted murder after she put her newborn son in a dumpster. This is the second baby she has discarded in this manner.
Reno resident Taylour Dickinson, 30, was sentenced to 8-20 years in prison for attempted murder after placing her newborn son into a dumpster. This is the second child Dickinson has placed into a dumpster; the first did not survive.
She was sentenced to 8-20 years in prison and received credit for time served of 473 days.
Dickinson claimed to have "extreme remorse" and "never intended harm" to the baby. She also said she had an "undiagnosed mental health disorder."
According to News 4, 30-year-old Taylour Dickinson was sentenced to 8-20 years in prison and received credit for time served of 473 days.
She initially entered a not-guilty plea, but ultimately pleaded no contest to the attempted murder charge of her newborn son, who survived.
Under a plea agreement, prosecutors dismissed an additional charge of "child abuse, neglect, or endangerment."
On July 5, 2025, a woman reported hearing a baby crying inside a dumpster at the Elevate Apartments on Sun Valley Boulevard in Reno, Nevada.
Police from Washoe County Sheriff's Office responded, and the son of a family who had seen the baby climbed in and handed the baby to police.
The baby boy was in a white trash bag and had been left there for about 10 hours. Police wrapped him in a survival blanket and he was taken to Renown Regional Medical Center.
When questioned, Dickinson denied knowing about the baby, but a DNA test confirmed she was the mother.
She later told police that she didn't know she was pregnant. She said she thought she had passed "blood and clotting."
Before her sentencing, she told Judge Egan Walker that she had "extreme remorse" and "never intended harm" to the baby. She also said she had an "undiagnosed mental health disorder."
However, this is the second time Dickinson has put a baby in the garbage.
In 2023, she gave birth, wrapped the baby in a blanket, and put him or her into the garbage. The baby died. In that instance, the medical examiner did not find a cause of death and Dickinson escaped charges.
This time her baby survived.
There has been an uptick in reports about abandoned and murdered newborns — and while abortion supporters are attempting to link these cases to legal protections for preborn children, the incidents are occurring in pro-life and pro-abortion states alike. And every single state has a Safe Haven law, allowing for the safe surrender of an infant up to a certain age at designated locations.
In Nevada, where this attempted murder took place, abortion is legal for any reason through the first 24 weeks (six months) of pregnancy and after 24 weeks for so-called health reasons. However, infants can be surrendered up to 30 days after birth in the state.
Dickinson said she thought she passed "blood and clotting." Such language mirrors the pro-abortion euphemisms spun by abortion groups and abortion-friendly media outlets to dehumanize preborn children. Countless women have had abortions believing that the child was just "pregnancy tissue" or "clumps of cells," only to learn that their babies were living human beings with beating hearts.
But abortion supporters are promoting the idea that these lives don't matter after birth either.
Long-time pro-abortion activist Jessica Valenti has complained about an investigation that took place after an infant’s body was found in a dumpster at a Toledo apartment complex. She wrote on her blog, “Apparently someone reported pregnancy remains found in a trash bin outside a Toledo apartment complex — and instead of recognizing it as a private medical loss, police opened an investigation.”
Abortion enthusiasts expect police to now ignore dead bodies because the child's death might have been natural or might have been a legally approved killing.
There's no other group of individuals whose deaths would be expected to be ignored by police when found in a public dumpster.
Phrasing like "private medical loss" is just another way to dehumanize preborn children and convince people to 'mind their own business.' This is how Roe v. Wade happened in the first place. The Supreme Court (and eventually the American public) bought the idea that killing one's own child is a 'private matter' and that anyone who tries to stop it is overstepping into someone's personal, private decision-making process.
The wide access and availability of the abortion pill will only serve to increase the number of babies left in dumpster, garbages, and toilets as women now take the drugs alone at home at any point in pregnancy with no medical oversight, and then discard their babies.
