Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s Socialist Party is looking to make abortion a constitutional right in response to efforts from the Madrid city council to give abortion-seeking women information about the potential psychological effects of abortion.

On X, Sánchez wrote:

The PP has decided to merge with the far right. That's their choice. They can do it. But not at the expense of women's freedoms and rights. For that reason, we are going to:

1️⃣ Prevent the provision of misleading or anti-scientific information about abortion, by reforming Royal Decree 825/2010 and

2️⃣ Bring to Parliament a proposal to constitutionalize the right to voluntary termination of pregnancy, in line with the jurisprudence of the Constitutional Court.

Not everyone agrees with this move; though People's Party (PP) leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo has said though he does agree with keeping abortion legal, he does not agree that it comprises a fundamental human right.

If Spain decides to make abortion a constitutional right, it will be only the second country in the world to do so, following France in 2024 (which was in direct response to the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022 in the U.S.).
