SHOCK: 14-year-old girl reportedly used as surrogate

Authorities are investigating after discovering a pregnant 14-year-old girl was allegedly being used as a surrogate.

Key Takeaways:

  • Oklahoma police were called to an apartment complex to investigate the case of a suspected sexual assault after a 14-year-old girl was discovered to be pregnant with twins.

  • The girl's mother said she could not have any more children and that her daughter was desperate for more siblings, so the daughter was reportedly serving as a 'surrogate'.

  • The mother's boyfriend is suspected of fathering the children, but it is unclear if a DNA test has been performed. It is also not clear if it the girl is pregnant through sexual assault or artificial insemination.

  • If the pregnancy is a result of a twisted form of surrogacy, it would still be illegal, as surrogates must be at least 21 years old.

The Details:

Oklahoma City police are investigating the case of a 14-year-old girl seemingly used as a surrogate. In December, police were called to an apartment for a case of suspected sexual assault, as the girl was pregnant with twins and Child Protective Services had made a report.

Her mother's boyfriend was suspected to be the father, but it is unknown if police were able to collect a DNA sample from him.

Her mother, however, denied the girl was a victim of sexual assault. She told police that her daughter “desperately wanted additional siblings” and that she (the mother) also “wanted children with her current boyfriend.” Yet the mother had reportedly undergone a tubal ligation, which left her unable to bear children.

The girl is now 15, and the twins are reportedly due any time. She is now in protective custody, while her mother has fled to California, and the boyfriend is missing.

Why It Matters:

Even if the teen was used as a surrogate through some form of artificial insemination and not sexually assaulted, the case is still deeply disturbing, and reveals the dark truth behind the shiny veneer of surrogacy: the practice is inherently exploitative, and treats women as property, not people. There are numerous risks. As Live Action News has previously explained:

Surrogate mothers are at higher risk of developing conditions like gestational diabetes, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, and bleeding complications after birth. Babies conceived via IVF are likewise at a higher risk for numerous complications, including low birth weight and prematurity.

And while it may be legitimate for the girl to want siblings and the mother to want more children, children are not products to which anyone is entitled.

The Bottom Line:

Authorities are continuing to investigate, though currently no arrests have been made.
