Pro-life Australian group mourns 'a quarter of the next generation' lost to abortion

According to a pro-life group in Australia, a quarter of the next generation of Australians has been killed by abortion, and they hope to raise awareness about the human cost of abortion.

Key Takeaways:

  • The pro-life group Love Australia says that a quarter of the next generation of Australians are missing because of abortion.

  • The group commemorates the 2019 decriminalization of abortion in New South Wales each year with a walk for life to draw awareness to the human cost of abortion.

  • Walk organizers said about 88,000 abortions take place each year in Australia.

The Details:

On Saturday, September 20, 2025, the “Love Sydney, Walk for Life” will take place to "mark[] the anniversary of NSW parliament passing revised abortion laws in 2019." The theme is “Love the next generation,” to commemorate life and highlight the human cost of abortion.

In a statement cited by Christian Daily International (CDI), Jodie Pickard, founding director of Love Australia, stated, “A quarter of the next generation of Australians are missing because their lives ended through abortion.”

Abortion remains legal in New South Wales up to birth. Event organizer Love Sydney (a branch of Love Australia) said there are about 88,000 abortions annually in Australia.

“Babies are being legally terminated in the thousands every week in this country. So friends, the least that we can all do is to continue speaking up for the babies, whatever it costs us," said Dr. Jereth Kok, a Christian doctor suspended from medicine partly for his articulation of pro-life views on social media, in a 2024 speech quoted by The Daily Declaration.

Love Australia's Pickard said of the event:

"Our prayer is that there will be a future for Australia that upholds the sanctity of every life and abortion becomes unthinkable. As Christians we are to lead the way with our love for the Lord, our neighbors and ourselves, offering help, hope and healing to all who need it."

In remarks to Catholic Weekly, a spokeswoman for Love Australia testified that the group is dedicated to protecting life “from conception to natural death” through cultural change and peaceful lobbying, such as by supporting churches in caring for women facing unexpected pregnancies, as well as women facing post-abortion regret or grief.

“We want to be people that others will not run away from, but turn to, for love and support,” the spokeswoman said. “While making abortion unthinkable is the major goal, the journey to get there is to love each other so well, that every heartbeat may experience the love of God through us, and become heaven-bound.”

What's Happening:

Christian leaders poised to speak include keynote speaker Martyn Iles, former managing director of the Australian Christian Lobby from 2018 to 2023 and co-founder of the Human Rights Alliance, a law firm promoting religious freedom and free speech. Iles presently is at the helm of a content ministry called “At the Crus”; he co-founded a Christian open-learning platform known as “Proto.”

Various churches and pro-life groups have voiced their support for Saturday’s event. A Facebook invitation published and shared says the event will be “a beautiful day of unity, truth and strength on behalf of the babies who cannot fight for themselves,” calling on participants to “join us to uphold the sanctity of life in New South Wales,” because “abortion must end, both legislatively and in the hearts and minds of those across our state.”
