Woman pregnant with twins jumps from second-story to escape fire

A Tennessee woman pregnant with twins is currently in the hospital after jumping out a second-story window to save herself — and her preborn children — from a house fire.

Key Takeaways:

  • A Tennessee woman pregnant with twins leaped from the second story of her burning home.

  • The woman suffered injuries and is recovering in the hospital.

  • Doctors have told her that despite the ordeal, her twins are doing well.

The Details:

Katie Barker, who is seven months pregnant with twins, was forced to jump out the window of her home in Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee, when it caught fire recently. Barker found herself trapped by the fire, and said she faced a life-saving decision to jump.

"It was either risk breaking bones or them planning a funeral," Barker said. "I have an older daughter and six-year-old and then two little boys that are in my belly counting on me and I couldn't leave my husband, so I didn't."

"I just kind of leaned out the window on my side and I landed on my knee and my hip and my back," she said of the jump.

She was assisted by Soddy-Daisy police officers who were the first to respond to the scene.

"Acting without hesitation, these officers positioned themselves beneath the window and successfully assisted an individual in escaping from the 2nd floor of the burning home," a press release stated.

Officers are also credited with saving Barker's father-in-law, who uses a wheelchair and was unable to get out of the home without assistance.

The family's GoFundMe explained that Barker “sustained substantial injuries” due to the fire, including a “broken pelvis, compressed vertebrae and severe smoke inhalation.”

"My pelvis is stable even though it's broken, so I am able to do physical therapy to learn how to walk again," Barker said. "Right now my muscles in my right leg don't want to work completely."

The Bottom Line:

Thankfully, despite her injuries, doctors have told Barker that her preborn twins are doing just fine.

"I am happy to report the twins are currently doing well in mamas belly," the GoFundMe organizer reported. "We thank God for keeping them safe and for quick reaction times that saved lives."
