Pregnancy help organization sues California AG for censoring its pro-life speech
(Thomas More Society) Culture of Life Family Services (COLFS), a nonprofit charity operating a licensed community health clinic, is suing California Attorney General Rob Bonta in federal court for his attempts to shut down Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) services. On July 30, 2024, Thomas More Society attorneys filed a lawsuit in United States District Court in San Diego, California, against Bonta’s unconstitutional attacks on pregnancy help organizations’ speech about APR.
In September 2023, despite the proven success of APR, Bonta filed a lawsuit against Heartbeat International to stop APR services. Heartbeat filed its response to the Complaint with the California Superior Court in February 2024 and is preparing for a comprehensive legal counterattack against Bonta’s suit. Now, to prevent a lawsuit against it, Culture of Life Family Services seeks declaratory and injunctive relief establishing that providing APR services is constitutionally protected.
“Attorney General Rob Bonta refuses to recognize a woman’s right to reverse an abortion in progress when she has changed her mind about the procedure,” said Peter Breen, Thomas More Society Executive Vice President & Head of Litigation. “Abortion Pill Reversal gives these women a second chance to choose life, a choice that Bonta and the abortion industry would strip from her. In his quest to silence pregnancy help ministries, Bonta is violating Culture of Life Family Services’ right to speak and aid women in exercising their reproductive privacy rights.”

“With all of the crime and corruption in California, it is tragic and beyond comprehension that AG Bonta – our state’s top law enforcement officer, with a $1.3B budget – is using his vast resources to target pregnancy centers and strip women of their right to procreative choice, and their right to continue with a pregnancy through the safe and effective Abortion Pill Reversal process, said Paul M. Jonna, partner with LiMandri & Jonna LLP and Special Counsel to the Thomas More Society. “Bonta’s actions are politically motivated and blatantly unconstitutional. We are proud to represent COLFS in its fight to protect its rights and the rights of its patients.”
