New Mexico abortion advocates plan second state-funded abortion business
New Mexico Alliance for Life (NMAFL) is reporting that pro-abortion administrators at the University of New Mexico (UNM) are partnering with pro-abortion state officials to construct the state's second state-funded abortion business. The first is currently under construction in Las Cruces and the second is potentially planned for Las Vegas.
Pro-abortion University of New Mexico administrators are partnering with state officials to construct a second state-funded abortion facility in the state.
The first facility, under construction in Las Cruces, was paid for by $10 million in state funding.
The second facility would be backed by 'another $10 million appropriation from a year ago,' according to the UNM Health Sciences Center CEO.
In 2022, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed an executive order directing the Department of Finance and Administration to designate $10 million for a state-funded abortion facility. It also directed the state Department of Health to "leverage State resources to expand access to reproductive healthcare, including abortion in underserved areas of the state.”
According to NMAFL, during the 2025 legislation, pro-abortion Democrats' made a "last-minute move to insert language to fund a 'reproductive health center in Northern New Mexico' into HB 450, the capital outlay funding bill. Legislators were given less than 24 hours' notice of the highly controversial line-item addition that was ultimately rammed through the legislature despite public outcry." The bill ultimately passed both the House and Senate and the 2026 legislation amended it to allow the purchase of a property for a $10 million abortion facility paid for by the state.
Now the pro-abortion legislators appear to be looking to set up the second state-funded abortion facility.
According to NMAFL, during a UNM Board of Regents meeting earlier this year, Christopher Arndt, M.D., the interim president and CEO of the UNM Health Sciences Center, said, "And we are looking for the best locations to potentially build a like-minded clinic with another $10 million appropriation from a year ago in northern New Mexico. After discussions with the state of New Mexico, it was found that Las Vegas, New Mexico would be the ideal location for that."
Elisa Martinez, executive director of NMAFL said she is not surprised that Las Vegas would be the chosen location for the second facility.
“It is no surprise the pro-abortion activists are targeting Las Vegas, New Mexico. With two college campuses and a central role in northern New Mexico, this community puts them within reach of young women facing unexpected pregnancies,” she said. "Just as they tried to sneak the funding for their abortion project through the legislature, pro-abortion activists are now hiding details of their plans to expand their abortion empire to Las Vegas — proof of how deeply unpopular and controversial this plan remains."
New Mexico has no limits on abortion, and is setting itself up to be the "back alley abortion clinic" of Texas, where most preborn children are protected from abortion, said Mike Seibel, Senior Counsel for Abortion on Trial, in 2022. He noted that at the time, "New Mexicans don’t want abortion. We have one of the lowest in-state abortion rates in the country and its at about seven percent."
