Judge allows unlicensed Indiana abortion center to open, pro-lifers rally against it

On June 15, several Indiana pro-life organizations will hold a rally for women’s safety in South Bend. The rally comes on the heels of a May 31 ruling from a Senior Judge of the U.S. District Court of Southern Indiana allowing a new abortion facility in South Bend to operate without a state license. According to an Indiana Right to Life press release, Whole Woman’s Health Alliance’s (WWHA) original application for state licensure was denied because “Based upon the Department’s review, the Commissioner finds WWHA failed to meet the requirement that the Applicant is of reputable and responsible character and the supporting documentation provided inaccurate statements and information.” Despite this, Judge Sarah Evans Barker’s ruling allows WWHA to open and operate without the license.

“Judge Barker’s decision to side with the abortion operators will put Hoosier Jud and lead to the deaths of hundreds of unborn children,” said Indiana Right to Life President and CEO Mike Fichter. “We expect WWHA will now open without an abortion license, meaning Hoosiers have no way to know if they are complying with health and safety rules or not. Judge Barker’s decision is another example of a court trampling states’ rights when it comes to any measure that protects life.”

Indiana Right to Life and St. Joseph County Right to Life are teaming up for the rally, and enlisting nationally known speakers Destiny Herndon-De La Rosa of New Wave Feminists, Eric Scheidler of Pro-Life Action League, Lily Hutkowski of Students for Life, Mark Harrington of Created Equal, and Ryan Bomberger of the Radiance Foundation.

“Judge Evans Barker’s ruling undermines state authority and threatens Hoosier moms and families,” said St. Joseph County Right to Life Executive Director Jackie Appleman. “We’re calling on people of good sense around the state to join us in standing against this abuse to human rights and states’ rights.”
