'What a fighter': Florida preemie born at 22 weeks 'graduates' from NICU
A baby boy born at just 22 weeks gestation has been able to join his family at home after receiving care in the hospital for over 200 days. Hospital staff offered him a sweet graduation-style sendoff to commemorate the milestone.
John Delancey III weighed just 1 pound, 2 ounces at birth.
He spent 257 days in the NICU before going home.
NICU staff held a ceremony to celebrate his discharge.
Babies born as young as 21 weeks have survived outside the womb.
John Delancey III was born on June 6, 2025, weighing just 1 pound, 2 ounces. He received care in the NICU at HCA Florida Brandon Hospital, where he ended up staying for 257 days.
His older sister, Stephanie Daniels, told the Tampa Bay Times that his first few weeks of life were touch and go.
“He was very fragile,” she said. “The first two weeks, the doctors were not sure whether he was going to make it.”
Despite his health challenges, John pulled through; last month, he was able to go home with his family weighing a healthy 17 pounds. The NICU team at HCA Florida Brandon Hospital held a special graduation ceremony to celebrate his great milestone.
“We are so proud of John and the strength he has shown,” the care team said in a joint statement. “He has already made a lasting mark on all of us.”
“It takes extraordinary teamwork to care for a baby born this early, and John reminded us every day why this work matters,” NICU medical director Dr. Kiran Dwarakanath said in a statement.
“Micropreemies face incredible challenges from the moment they arrive, yet John showed us time and again what a fighter he is," Dwarakanath added. "Our team poured their hearts into helping him grow stronger and it has been a privilege to watch him reach this milestone.”
Decades ago, Delancey's survival would have seemed unthinkable, but now it's becoming more common for babies as young as 21 weeks to survive their extremely premature births. Despite the fact that they can survive outside the womb with proper treatment, many babies this gestational age are routinely and legally killed inside the womb throughout the country.

Baby John's discharge from the NICU, which was a joyous occasion for both hospital staff and his family, is a reminder that all children are worth celebrating and fighting for.
