Government records vital in legal case against Planned Parenthood shredded

Kathleen Sebelius was Kansas Governor at the time the records were destroyed. Earlier this month she was the featured speaker at a fundraiser for NARAL, a national pro-abortion organization.

It’s good to have friends in high places. Just ask Planned Parenthood. The Planned Parenthood clinic in the Kansas City suburb of Overland Park is facing 107 charges, including the falsification of abortion reports. But in a court record released on Friday, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment admitted to destroying the evidence that could have proven, among other things, that Planned Parenthood falsified the abortion reports.

According to the Kansas City Star:

The destroyed records were critical in establishing the authenticity of records from 2003 obtained by [Phill] Kline when he investigated the agency as attorney general. Planned Parenthood later provided copies of the documents that the state contended did not match those Kline had.

Later, as Johnson County district attorney in 2007, Kline filed the 107-count complaint against the agency.

Kline argued at the time that the group had performed illegal late-term abortions and falsified or forged documents to make it appear they were legal.

Prosecutors contended that Planned Parenthood had not kept the documents five years as required by law and falsified copies to cover it up.

Kline had also charged Planned Parenthood with multiple misdemeanor counts of failing to maintain the pregnancy termination reports, failing to perform viability tests on fetuses and unlawful late-term abortions.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment just recently told prosecutors the documents were destroyed as part of a “routine document destruction” in “approximately 2005.” Routine?

From 2003 to 2009, the department was part of pro-abortion Governor Kathleen Sebelius’ administration. Serious questions remain unanswered.

  • Who had access to the records before they were destroyed?
  • Did Sebelius know about the records?
  • Did she know about the content of the records?
  • Did she instruct, directly or indirectly, anyone to destroy the records?
  • Were the records destroyed, with or without her knowledge, to protect Planned Parenthood?

Sebelius, currently serving as Secretary of Health and Human Services in the Obama administration, has defended Planned Parenthood against efforts this year to defund the nation’s largest abortion provider.
