British woman who took husband for assisted suicide in Switzerland wants it legal in UK

Louise Shackleton of North Yorkshire escorted her husband Antony to the Swiss assisted suicide clinic Dignitas in December 2024 and now wants assisted dying to be legalized in the UK.

Key Takeaways:

  • Shackleton was investigated for assisting a suicide after she took her husband to Dignitas to die.

  • Police eventually cleared her of committing a crime.

  • She is now arguing for assisted suicide to be legalized.

The Details:

Shackleton underwent 10 months of investigation for assisting a suicide before police declared that the Crown Prosecution Service had exonerated her of any wrongdoing. She also made her case for assisted suicide before the House of Lords peers as they tried to examine the controversial bill that could legalize the practice in England and Wales.

Recalling her "amazing" husband, who had been fighting motor neurone disease, Shackleton claimed that he had been "so pleased" that the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill passed its first vote in the House of Commons last November, right before his death at Dignitas.

Shackleton stated that though they could afford the expensive trip to Switzerland,  assisted suicide should not be accessible only those who can afford it, the BBC reported:

“The wealthy have choice. We need to be mindful that society has spoken via the Commons, and this choice of whether to end suffering needs to be afforded to all the people and not just to the elite.

It’s not about whether someone should have the right to die, but whether the state or anyone else has the right to compel you to live a life that’s full of suffering, pain and agony.”

Commentary:

The mere act of maintaining continued existence without medical interventions is not "compelled" or forced; engaging in a voluntary act to deliberately bring about an earlier death, however, is use of force — compulsion over true compassion.

Choosing "whether to end suffering" through assisted suicide or euthanasia is, in reality, never merely the ending of a person's 'suffering' but the ending of that person's very existence — and the euphemistic, emotive language masks these truths.

It is similar to the language surrounding abortion, with abortion advocates claiming that women experience "forced pregnancy" due to laws that restrict the killing of preborn children. However, while an act of sexual intercourse has the potential to be "forced" through assault, the actual conception of a child isn't. Additionally, the state of being pregnant naturally continues unless an event disrupts it — be it miscarriage, birth, or force applied through abortion.

Dear Reader,

Every day in America, more than 2,800 preborn babies lose their lives to abortion.

That number should break our hearts and move us to action.

Ending this tragedy requires daily commitment from people like you who refuse to stay silent.

Millions read Live Action News each month — imagine the impact if each of us took a stand for life 365 days a year.

Together, we can end abortion and create a future where every child is cherished and every mother is supported.

It is compassionate to help alleviate human suffering through pain relief and comfort measures — but not to intentionally kill in order to end it.

The Backstory:

The bill in question was brought forward by Labour MP Kim Leadbeater, and would permit terminally ill adults in England and Wales expected to have fewer than six months to live to opt for an assisted death, pending authorization from two doctors and a panel comprising a social worker, senior legal figure, and psychiatrist.

Of course, as has been seen in other countries like Canada and the Netherlands, safeguards surrounding assisted dying have a tendency to crumble quickly.

In September 2025, this bill passed second reading stage in the House of Lords, in a historic first for such legislation in the British Parliament. Now, the House of Lords also appears to be limiting upcoming testimony surrounding the bill — a move that assisted suicide opponents have called "scandalous," "deeply troubling," and "a very bad sign."

Pro-life advocates have voiced worries that terminally ill people, especially the elderly, disabled or vulnerable, could be coerced into choosing assisted suicide, stating that the government should channel resources into enhancing end-of-life care rather than support assisted suicide, the latter which is presently outlawed in England and Wales with maximum jail sentence of 14 years.

The Bottom Line:

Should both the House of Commons and House of Lords agree on the final wording of the bill, assisted suicide would become legal in England and Wales.

Assisted suicide is spreading in popularity around the globe, and it is not something only the "wealthy elite" are 'privileged' to receive. Instead, it is the most vulnerable — the elderly, ill, and disabled — who are most likely to feel its coercive effects first.
