A recent article in Campus Reform revealed that the University of Maryland (UMD) is offering a $4,000 stipend to eligible state clinicians who participate in its "Reproductive Health Fellowship," which centers around abortion training.

UMD's Reproductive Health Fellowship for Clinicians operates within the Maryland Abortion and Reproductive Clinical Health (MARCH) Fellowship. Eligibility is open to advanced practice registered nurses, certified nurse-midwives, physicians, and physicians associates/assistants who are licensed to practice in Maryland.

Priority is given to clinicians practicing in a number of specialty areas, one of which includes "pediatric and adolescent care."

The program promises that attendees will "gain in-depth knowledge and skills for medication abortion, patient counseling, and managing post-abortion care with confidence and compassion. Our fellows also gain exposure to procedural abortion care."

Maryland has virtually no pro-life protections or abortion restrictions, as abortion is legal through all nine months of pregnancy. As is evident through this training program, abortionists in the state do not need to be licensed physicians — a requirement in place in many other states to protect the health and wellbeing of women undergoing the procedure.

In 2023, Live Action News reported that Maryland Governor Wes Moore had released $3.5 million to fund the training of new abortionists. That funding was increased in 2024, when Moore made another announcement that millions more of taxpayer dollars would go to increase abortion through a clinical training program. Totaling $15.6 million, the funding includes a $10.6 million grant for Maryland’s Abortion Care Clinical Training Program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and an additional $5 million budget proposal to increase Medicaid provider reimbursement for abortion. 

In a press release detailing that 2024 allocation, Moore announced that much of the money would go directly toward the University of Maryland.

“A $10.6 million training grant has been awarded to the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) and University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) to administer Maryland’s Abortion Clinical Care Training Program. The grant will be used to expand the number of healthcare professionals with abortion care training, increase the racial and ethnic diversity among health care professionals with abortion care education, and support the identification of clinical sites needing training.”
