Safe Haven Baby Boxes announces multiple new locations in four states
Safe Haven Baby Boxes, an organization dedicated to providing safe infant surrender options to parents in crisis, is celebrating the installation of new boxes in various locations around the country.
Safe Haven Baby Boxes recently installed new boxes in Davenport, Iowa; Baldwin, Wisconsin; and Kansas City, Missouri.
New boxes will open soon in San Antonio, Texas, and Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
Safe Haven Baby Boxes provide a safe yet anonymous option for parents who may feel uncomfortable with a face-to-face surrender.
Safe Haven Baby Boxes recently celebrated the opening of three new boxes, with two more scheduled in the days ahead.
Iowa's fifth Safe Haven Baby Box has now been installed in Davenport, at MercyOne Genesis Davenport Hospital on 1227 East Rusholme St.
The box was officially opened during a blessing ceremony on October 19.
"We're the biggest hospital. It's really important for us as the center to have this resource for our outreach locations," Lauren Lovedy with MercyOne said. "We have now an upgraded NICU, we have a pediatric unit, we have 24/7 neonatology. If a baby does need medical attention, we're here to do that for them. We're not delaying care. Not only are we getting them safe, we're getting them the care they need."
Iowa law allows parents in crisis to legally surrender babies up to 90 days old.
The ceremony to formally install the Safe Haven Baby Box in Baldwin took place at Baldwin EMS at 1225 Cedar Street on October 20.
The box arrived in Baldwin thanks in part to Perin Dooley, a critical care paramedic duty supervisor with Baldwin EMS who saw the need for an anonymous surrender option for parents in crisis.
“For our crews too. We’ve gone on some pretty bad calls and any call with a child is not a call that we want to go on," she said. "This is at least a positive that we’re able to help somebody who’s in a crisis and be there for the baby and care for the baby."
Wisconsin law allows for surrender of infants 30 days or younger.
Kansas City welcomed its newest Safe Haven Baby Box during a blessing ceremony on October 21. The box is located at the Kansas City Fire Station 14, 8300 N. Brighton Ave.
“The Baby Box provides another option for someone who may not feel comfortable with the face-to-face surrender," said Battalion Chief Kelsey Whetro during the unveiling ceremony. “No matter which option someone chooses, the goal is the same at the end of the day: to protect the life of the baby and ensure that everyone receives the care that they need.”
Missouri law allows for the safe surrender of infants 90 days or younger.
San Antonio will be home to three new Safe Haven Baby Boxes, located at San Antonio Fire Department Fire Stations #7, #24 and #18. All three will be unveiled in a ceremony at Fire Station #7, 1414 South St. Mary's Street, San Antonio, on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at 11 AM CDT.
A press release notes that "these three Baby Boxes mark the 484th, 485th and 486th Safe Haven Baby Box locations in the nation and the 24th, 25th, and 26th in Texas."
"Because the people of San Antonio stepped up, a parent who feels out of options now has a safe, legal, and anonymous one close to home. We pray this box is never needed, but if it is, San Antonio will be ready," said Monica Kelsey, Founder and CEO of Safe Haven Baby Boxes.
In Texas, infants must be 60 days or younger for legal surrender.
Wisconsin's newest Safe Haven Baby Box will be located at Manitowoc Fire Rescue Department Station #3, 3820 Dewey Street. After its installation on October 28, the state will be home to 10 Safe Haven Baby Boxes.
"No mother should ever feel like she has nowhere to turn," said Monica Kelsey. "With this Baby Box, Manitowoc is telling every parent in crisis that there is help, there is hope, and there is a safe place for their baby."
The public is welcomed and encouraged attend the blessing and official unveiling, which is scheduled for 12pm CDT on October 28.
Safe Haven Baby Boxes are temperature controlled boxes installed within a building like a fire station, EMS station, or hospital. Inside each box is a bassinet to hold an infant. When the child is placed inside, the door automatically locks and triggers a silent alarm, alerting first responders. The child is retrieved within minutes and given appropriate medical care. The boxes are designed to provide a safe yet anonymous option for parents who may feel uncomfortable with a face-to-face surrender.
Depending on state law, children are be placed with either foster families or adoptive families.
