Infants safely surrendered in Oklahoma and Indiana baby boxes
Two babies have been surrendered recently in Safe Haven Baby Boxes in Indiana and Oklahoma. These surrenders underscore the great service these boxes are providing for families in crisis.
Babies have been surrendered recently in Safe Haven Baby Boxes in both Oklahoma and Indiana.
The Oklahoma surrender was the first ever in the state using a baby box, while Indiana's surrender was the state's 90th using a baby box.
Safe Haven Baby Boxes provide options for parents in crisis, and also offer help to the parents who choose to surrender.
Oklahoma had its first-ever surrender in a Safe Haven Baby Box last week, as an infant was placed in the device located at St. Francis Children's Hospital.
"We recognize the love and courage it can take for a parent to make this decision, often under incredibly difficult circumstances," said Doug Williams, president of Saint Francis Hospital. "We are grateful this parent knew there was a safe place to turn, and we want others who may be facing similar circumstances to know they have that option, too. No parent should feel that they have nowhere to turn."
"This mother's decision was an act of love," Monica Kelsey, the founder and CEO of Safe Haven Baby Boxes, said in a news release. "She chose life. She chose safety. She chose hope."
Indiana's 90th Safe Haven Baby Box surrender occurred Monday morning at the Sugar Creek Township Fire Department in West Terre Haute.
Sugar Creek Fire Chief Darrick Scott said the surrender involved a "beautiful, baby girl" who appeared healthy.
In a social media post, the department discussed the surrender further, writing:
While this is a deeply emotional moment, it is also a reminder of why these boxes exist—to provide a safe, confidential option for a parent in crisis and give a newborn the opportunity for a safe future.
We are grateful that this resource was available when it was needed. Our thoughts are with everyone involved, and we hope this little one’s future is filled with love, safety, and endless possibilities.
The Terre Haute Baby Box is one of 152 baby box locations in the state of Indiana.

Safe Haven Baby Boxes provide a safe, secure, and anonymous way for parents in crisis to surrender an unharmed child they feel unable to care for, without any legal penalty. All children deserve a chance at life instead of being aborted or abandoned to die after birth.
When the child is placed inside one of the baby boxes, a silent alarm immediately alerts authorities, who respond within minutes. In most cases, the child is later placed for adoption. The parent who surrenders also finds information in the box regarding local resources and support.
Parents looking for more help can also call or text the Safe Haven Baby Box hotline at 1-866-99BABY1.
