Indian officials crack down on illegal abortion kit sales

The Odisha Health and Family Welfare Department in India has conducted a statewide crackdown on the unlawful sale and misuse of Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) kits and abortion drugs. The goals are to protect women from unsafe DIY abortions and to regulate abortion drug usage.

Key Takeaways:

  • Raids have taken place across the Indian state of Odisha, aimed at stopping the spread of illegal abortion kits.

  • Many shops and pharmacies were caught selling abortion drugs without prescriptions, a violation of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.

The Details:

The Drugs Control Directorate in Odisha, India, mobilized teams composed of assistant drug controllers, drug inspectors, and police authorities to launch raids against pharmacies participating in the unauthorized sale of abortion kits.

The Indian authorities’ actions came following a trend of grave health complications among women who had taken illegally-obtained abortion drugs without medical supervision. Doctors have recorded cases of heavy bleeding, incomplete abortions, infections, and other issues such as undiagnosed ectopic pregnancies, which necessitate instant medical attention but may go untreated when women consume abortion drugs at home.

Authorities investigated more than 150 medical shops, seizing illegally stocked abortion kits and unlicensed medicines. Enforcement teams also discovered a mismanagement of record keeping, drug stores without pharmacists, and many pharmacies that were caught selling abortion drugs without a doctor’s prescription, breaching the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and other rules regulating the sale of drugs in India.

According to reports, more than 400 raids have been carried out in different districts and have led to the detection of 234 violations. The coordinated raids took place across all districts, and 55 shop owners have been given notices.

Authorities cautioned that pharmacies are in danger of losing their licenses depending on the severity of the offenses. Drugs Controller Mamina Pattnaik said that while the department previously focused solely on inspections, it will now implement stricter measures regarding disciplinary action against those who violate the law.

The Bottom Line:

These recent events reinforce long-standing reservations that abortion drugs destroy human life and expose mothers to the physical risks and emotional trauma of abortion drugs without proper care or counseling. The Odisha government’s decisive action to enforce regulations is a right step towards safeguarding both mother and child by restricting access to abortion drugs.
