Florida man jailed for stabbing and choking pregnant girlfriend
A Florida man has been charged with one count of first-degree attempted premeditated murder, one count of aggravated battery on a pregnant victim, and one count of domestic battery by strangulation after authorities say he stabbed and strangled his pregnant girlfriend, landing her in the hospital.
D'Andre Burgess was arrested after he allegedly stabbed and choked his girlfriend, who is six months pregnant.
The woman curled in a ball on the floor in an attempt to protect her preborn baby.
The woman was rushed to the hospital. An update as to her condition and that of her baby has not been provided.
D'Andre Burgess, 31, of West Palm Beach, Florida, was arrested after he allegedly stabbed and choked his girlfriend, who is six months pregnant, on Saturday.
Police were called to a home where Burgess and the woman were reportedly visiting their one-year-old child. The two got into an argument, and Burgess pulled a knife out of his waistband. CBS12 reports he told the woman "they were both going to die or that he was going to spend 100 years in jail."
He then repeatedly stabbed her as she curled in a ball to protect her preborn baby.
A family member in the home was able to wrestle the knife from Burgess, allowing the woman to briefly escape. Burgess then choked her until she was unable to speak and was left gasping for air.
When first responders arrived, the woman was rushed to St. Mary's Hospital under a trauma alert. There have been no updated news reports as to the status of her or her baby.
Burgess is currently being held without bond at Palm Beach County Jail.
Police report that Burgess was the perpetrator in a number of domestic violence-related incidents with this woman.
As Hoodline reported: "Court documents show Burgess has a history of domestic violence allegations and was previously arrested for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, domestic battery by strangulation and aggravated stalking."
Violence against pregnant women is unfortunately very common; homicide is one of the leading causes of death of pregnant women.
Research shows that women in the U.S. who are pregnant or have recently given birth are more likely to die by homicide carried out by an intimate partner than to die from pregnancy-related causes.
