'It's about being there for a child': Customer adopts gas station clerk's baby
In a heartwarming story out of Georgia, a woman adopted the baby of her gas station clerk, offering him a loving home while also creating a loving bond with the birth mother.
D’Amber Davis adopted the baby of Katelyn Sparks, her gas station clerk, after Sparks told her she would be unable to care for him after giving birth.
Davis helped Sparks find medical care so she could continue her pregnancy.
Sparks remains in the baby's life, and calls Davis her "big sister."

D’Amber Davis routinely visited the same gas station every day. On one of those visits, she noticed that the clerk, Katelyn Sparks, was pregnant.
The two struck up a conversation; Sparks, who was 33 weeks pregnant, told Davis she felt she would be unable to care for the baby when she gave birth.
“In my mind I’m just like, instantly, I got to get this baby,” Davis said. “Not knowing nothing. I just know I got to get this baby.”
Davis had reportedly already considered adoption, but told herself she wanted to wait until she had finished school and was in a better place financially. After encountering Sparks, however, she felt perhaps the time was now.
Her young son, who was with her, provided the confirmation she was looking for.
“My son looked at me and he said, ‘Mama, we gotta get that baby,’" she said. "And there was confirmation.”
Davis returned the next day to speak with Sparks about her idea. Sparks, who hadn't had any prenatal care, agreed.
Davis helped Sparks find a doctor so could finish her pregnancy receiving care, and weeks later, baby Nolan was born weighing a healthy 7 pounds 8 ounces.
Davis officially adopted Nolan after his birth, but that wasn't the end of the story for Sparks, as she has remained in little Nolan's life.
"I'm his mom, but that's his bio mom, and he will forever know that," Davis told WMAZ.
Sparks, who visits Davis and Nolan, credited Davis for treating her like family.
“She’s more or less like my big sister,” Sparks said. “She’s helped me get closer to my entire family through this more than I thought it would."
Davis emphasized that adopting Nolan has been a wonderful experience.
“I thought he needed me, but I really needed him,” she said. “I love my kids to death, but I also love Nolan, and I don’t love him any different. He’s my own. He’s my son. He’s my life. He’s my world.”
She also talked about the importance of adoption.
“To be a family, y’all don’t have to have the same DNA or blood,” she said. “It’s just about being there for a person, a child.”
