Colorado abortion fund increased spending by 84% in 2025

Colorado abortion fund increased spending by 84% in 2025

A Colorado-based abortion fund reportedly paid for almost 4,000 abortions in 2025, increasing its spending by 84%, in a state that has become an abortion travel destination where no preborn child is protected by law.

Key Takeaways:

  • Colorado's Cobalt Abortion Fund bankrolled nearly 4,000 abortions in 2025.

  • The abortion group spent $2.4 million on abortions and abortion-related travel expenses last year, with more than $1.7 million directly paying for abortions — an 84% increase from 2024.

  • From 2020 to the first half of 2023, abortions increased by 89% in the state.

  • In 2024, Colorado passed Amendment 79, making abortion a state constitutional right.

The Details:

In 2025, the Cobalt Abortion Fund, the largest independent abortion fund in Colorado, spent nearly $2.5 million to bankroll abortion procedures and abortion-related travel, lodging, and child care.

Cobalt said that over $1.7 million of its 2025 budget went directly to paying for abortion procedures, an 84% jump over 2024. That money allowed nearly 4,000 abortions to be committed. Almost 48% of those women were Colorado residents, while close to 40% were from Texas, demonstrating how Colorado’s permissive abortion laws are drawing women from pro-life states to abort their babies, KUNC reported.

Karen Middleton, the president of Cobalt Abortion Fund, explained that the organization’s funding comes from both individual contributors and foundations, most of which are located in Colorado.

In addition, the group's director, Melisa Hidalgo-Cuellar, stated in remarks cited by Colorado Newsline:

“This number here really reflects that abortion bans are keeping people from accessing the essential health care that they need in their own state. They’re being forced to travel, and as they’re forced to travel, their care is delayed and their care becomes more and more expensive over time.”

However, funding a woman's abortion rather than helping her pay for pregnancy and parenting expenses adds a layer of pressure that incentivizes abortion over all other options. When a woman may not want an abortion but is concerned about how she will care for her child, the offer to pay for her abortion and abortion expenses could be the final push towards an unwanted abortion.

The Backstory:

In 2024, approximately 62% of Colorado voters authorized Amendment 79, which enshrined abortion as a constitutional right and allowed Medicaid and other public insurance programs to pay for abortions. After the amendment’s approval, the Colorado Legislature implemented legislation and passed various shield laws meant to protect abortionists. Even prior to the amendment, abortions had risen by 89% in Colorado between 2020 and the first half of 2023 as pro-life states enacted laws to protect preborn babies and pro-abortion states increased access.

The Bottom Line:

Although Cobalt has attempted to portray its work as providing “health care," the reality is that it is an organized, well-funded network to finance abortion travel and procedures on a massive scale, including for women from pro-life states. When women are offered "free" abortions and have their travel expenses covered, it acts as a form of pressure to end the lives of their children in the womb, especially for women facing financial concerns in their everyday lives.

The rise of Cobalt shows how, as some states pass laws to protect preborn children, others are trying to promote themselves as abortion hubs to lure women from pro-life states. Cobalt’s growth to nearly 4,000 abortions funded in 2025 depicts how rapidly pro-abortion infrastructure can scale when supported by lawmakers and donors.
