Baby born on flight from Atlanta to Portland: 'The whole plane cheered'

What started as a routine flight from Atlanta, Georgia, to Portland, Oregon, turned into a story one woman will never forget: Ashley Blair gave birth to her daughter, Brielle, while on board the five-hour flight.

Key Takeaways:

  • Ashley Blair gave birth to her daughter, Brielle, while on board a flight from Atlanta to Portland on April 24, 2026.

  • Tina Fritz, a paramedic who was traveling with her friend Kaarin Powell, assisted with the delivery.

  • Fritz and Powell had to improvise, borrowing blankets and shoelaces to ensure a successful delivery.

  • Blair and her new baby are reportedly in good health.

The Details:

The sky-high delivery took place on board Delta flight 478 on April 24. Blair, who was 38 weeks pregnant, was traveling to Portland, Oregon, so that her mother could be with her as she gave birth. However, little Brielle decided she had other plans, making her arrival on board the cross-country flight.

Tina Fritz, a paramedic who happened to be on board, told KOIN she responded when a call came over the intercom for medical assistance.

“Then the steward came up to us and he goes, ‘Hey, we have a lady up front who thinks she’s going into labor. Contractions are about three minutes apart. Can you guys check her out?'” Fritz said.

Fritz and her friend, Kaarin Powell, checked on Blair, quickly realizing that her baby was coming. Some quick thinking and improvisation were necessary to make sure the delivery proceeded as smoothly as possible.

“I asked for an OB kit, which they did not have. I asked for blankets, which they did not have. So I was like, okay, we need to get blankets from passengers. I need some shoestrings. So the flight attendant took his shoestring out, cut it for us,” Fritz said.

Zoom In:

Though the plane was preparing to land, Brielle was ready to make an arrival.

“She’s like, I gotta push, I gotta push. And within three really good pushes, the baby was out and doing perfect."

“She was gorgeous," Fritz said, as she also praised Blair. "Mom was a rock star, like, Mom did so good.”

As soon as Fritz cut the cord, they had to scramble to take seats. "We didn’t get anything buckled, and we just landed," she laughed. "Then, we gave baby back to Mom, and we taxied in, so the whole plane cheered for Mom. It was great."

Both Blair and Brielle are reportedly doing just fine after the mid-flight arrival.

The Bottom Line:

Delta has also released a statement praising everyone who volunteered to help ensure a successful delivery.

“We extend our sincere thanks to the crew and medical volunteers on board who stepped in to provide care to a customer onboard prior to landing in Portland," the organization said. "The health and safety of our customers is always our top priority, and we wish the new family all the best."
