One every 89 seconds: Newest Planned Parenthood report shows record number of abortions

Planned parenthood

Planned Parenthood has released its latest annual report for 2019-2020and as expected, abortions and taxpayer dollars at the abortion corporation are still on the rise. The report reveals a nearly 3% increase in abortions — a record for Planned Parenthood, and a slight increase in taxpayer funding from its 2018-2019 report. The 2019-2020 report by Planned Parenthood represents services provided by Planned Parenthood affiliate health centers from October 1, 2018 – September 30, 2019.

The report also specifies that Planned Parenthood’s financial numbers “reflect operations of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. and Planned Parenthood Global, Inc. for the year ended June 30, 2020. Affiliate figures reflect the operations of 53 Planned Parenthood affiliates and are based on amounts reported in affiliate audited financial statements for fiscal years ended during 2019.”

Key takeaways:

  • Abortions increased nearly 3%, according to the 2019-2020 report, from the previous year (7% increase from 2009), for a record high total of 354,871 abortions, up from 345,672. That’s over 972 preborn children daily — one killed every 89 seconds.
  • Taxpayer funding to Planned Parenthood increased from $616.8 million to $618.1 million in 2019-2020. That’s $1.7 million taxpayer dollars daily.
  • Planned Parenthood now holds over 41% of the abortion market share in the US, up from 40% the year prior.
  • Nearly one out of every six female clients visiting Planned Parenthood had an abortion.
  • Prenatal care and adoption referrals both dropped double digits from the previous year. Planned Parenthood commits 41 abortions for every one prenatal care service and 133 abortions for every adoption referral.

Increase in abortions

Planned Parenthood’s 2019-2020 report displays a total of 354,871 abortions, which is the highest ever recorded by Planned Parenthood, an increase of almost 3% from the 345,672 abortions previously reported. This represents an almost 7% increase from its abortion totals just over a decade ago, in 2009 (332,278).

Planned Parenthood’s market share of abortions has also increased to over 41%, based on the most recent totals for national abortion numbers reported by the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute in 2017.

Planned Parenthood’s multiple past attempts to downplay its prioritization of abortion has been debunked many times.

Clients and facilities

In the report, Planned Parenthood indicated that in 2019-2020, its client base remained at 2.4 million, the same as the previously reported year. This represents nearly 2.1 million female clients and 321,001 male clients, a growing demographic. In 2018-2019, Planned Parenthood’s male clients totaled 297,743, up from 250,000 in 2014. From October 2018 to October 2019, the numbers indicate that nearly one out of every six female clients that visited Planned Parenthood had an abortion.

In the past decade, Planned Parenthood’s clients have declined 20% from the 3 million they claimed to serve in 2009 and 27.27% percent since 1996-1997 (3.3 million clients).

Planned Parenthood facilities have remained at around 600 nationwide for the past several years, however they have fallen nearly 29% percent (28.57%) in the past decade, from 840 facilities in 2009, and 33.33% from a high of 900 in 1996-1997.

  • 2020:  600 facilities, 49 affiliates
  • 2019: 600 facilities, 56 affiliates
  • 2018: 600 facilities, 56 affiliates
  • 2009: 840 facilities, 83 affiliates
  • 1996: 900 (highest year on record), 142 affiliates

Cancer screenings

The latest annual report indicates an almost 6% increase in total cancer screenings (598,852), up from 566,186 reported in 2018-2019. However, in the past decade, total cancer screenings dropped over 67% (from 1,830,811 in 2009) and declined over 72% since a high in 2004 (2,157,849).

While Pap tests also rose nearly 7% (255,682 in 2018-2019 to 272,990 in 2019-2020) they have fallen nearly 70% from 904,820 in 2009 and nearly 77% from a high of 1,183,692 in 2004.

Manual breast exams (Planned Parenthood does not perform mammograms) rose 1.75% from 265,028 in 2018-2019 to 269,669 in 2019-2020. In the past decade, breast exams have fallen 68% from 830,312 in 2009 and over 75% from 1,086,654 in 2000-2001.

Family practice services

Family practice services declined over 6% from 34,075 in 2018-2019 to 31,912 in the most recent report.

This category “may include assessment and management of uncomplicated conditions related to the skin… the gastrointestinal system… ear, eye, nose, throat, and respiratory system… medication management of previously evaluated controlled hypertension; and medication management of previously evaluated hypothyroidism…” In addition, Planned Parenthood’s “primary care” is also included here.

According to the report, only “some affiliate health centers offer primary care services, which may include treatment of acute and chronic disease, minor office procedures, evaluations for referral to specialists, authorization for hospital care, health assessments, and well-person/well-child preventive maintenance.”

According to the report, Planned Parenthood committed over 11 abortions for every “family practice/primary care” service it claimed to have performed.

Other procedures

Planned Parenthood defines “other procedures” to include “WIC services, pediatric care, transgender services, other adult preventive care, and high complexity visits, including infertility services.”

This category increased nearly 83% (from 9,738 in 2018 to 17,791 in 2019-2020). It is plausible that this increase is likely due to Planned Parenthood’s addition of transgender services. More than 200 Planned Parenthood facilities (a third of the total facilities) in 31 states are now providing hormone therapy for transgender patients.

According to Abigail Shrier, transgender services are a growing business at the abortion giant. In a blog post, Shrier claimed a Planned Parenthood employee told her, “trans-identifying kids are cash cows, and they are kept on the hook for the foreseeable future in terms of follow-up appointments, bloodwork, meetings, etc., whereas abortions are (hopefully) a one-and-done situation.”

Prenatal care and adoption referrals

A 2020 survey of U.S. abortion businesses revealed that of the facilities that provided the majority of abortions, just 18% offered any kind of prenatal and/or obstetric care. Planned Parenthood is no exception. As Live Action investigations have shown in the past, few Planned Parenthood centers offer prenatal care.

The latest report reveals that the corporation’s prenatal care dropped nearly 12% (9,798 in 2018-2019 to 8,626 in 2019-2020). They have dropped over 72% from a high of 31,098 in 2010.

Adoption referrals also declined in the past year, dropping nearly 38% (from 4,279 in 2018-2019 to 2,667 in the latest report). This is a decline of nearly 46% from the 4,912 reported in 2007-2008.

What constitutes “prenatal care” and “adoption referrals” at Planned Parenthood is not specified. See below for more from former Planned Parenthood manager, Sue Thayer:

Pregnancy tests and contraception services

Planned Parenthood includes pregnancy testing as a “service” and reports 1,108,436 pregnancy tests in its most recent report, up nearly 3% from 2018-2019 but over 6% less than in 2007-2008.

Planned Parenthood’s overall contraception services increased about 2% from the last reported year (2,556,413 in 2018-2019 to to 2,565,910 the following year). Over the past decade, contraception services have declined by 36% (4,009,549 in 2009).

According to the 2019-2020 report, “Contraception clients are those who received contraceptive counseling and care at a Planned Parenthood health center at least once between October 1, 2018 – September 30, 2019.”

Revenue

The most recent 2019-2020 report shows Planned Parenthood received $618.1 million in taxpayer funding, making up 38% of Planned Parenthood’s revenue, a slight increase (.21%) from the $616.8 million reported in 2018-2019. This reflects a 27% increase from the $487.4 million received in 2009-2010.

Additional revenue included $370.4 million in “non-government health services revenue, and $510 million in private donations as well as $142.9 million in other operating revenue.” In total, Planned Parenthood’s revenue came to $1.6 billion ($1641.4) according to the 2019-2020 report. Expenses for the same year totaled $1.5 billion ($1,571.7) million, which means the corporation brought in $69.7 million in excess revenue in 2019-2020.

Summary

Planned Parenthood now receives nearly $1.7 million in taxpayer dollars every single day while ending the lives of over 972 preborn children each day, which equates to one abortion every 89 seconds. Planned Parenthood now commits 41 abortions for every one prenatal care service, and kills 133 preborn babies for every one adoption referral, according to the 2019-2020 report.

Author’s NotePlanned Parenthood initially released their service counts in the 2009-2010 annual report but later adjusted those figures in their Planned Parenthood 2009 annual affiliate service census report – it is the latter that we used to compare ten year numbers here.
