A man in Nigeria has been arraigned for killing his pregnant girlfriend in a failed abortion attempt and burying her body in a shallow grave with the help of two accomplices.

Mumuni Abubaker, a student of the Federal Polytechnic Mubi, was arrested by the Adamawa State Police along with Huzaifa Shuaibu and Rabiu Adamu for their participation in the death of Franca Elisha, a student of the Department of Library Science at the same university. According to Punch, after Abubaker learned of Elisha’s pregnancy, he tried to coerce her to have an abortion.

In order to carry out the abortion, Abubaker took Elisha to his room “in the student’s community behind the state university for the clandestine abortion on August 6, 2021,” according to police. He asked Shuaibu, a student of the College of Health and Technology, to administer an injection that was meant to cause the death of the preborn child. But the already-horrific plan went wrong.

According to a confession by Abubaker, the injection caused Elisha to become delirious and faint. After she regained consciousness, they injected her a second time because the baby had not yet been expelled. Elisha fainted again, never to regain consciousness, and died. The two men then contacted Adamu to help them dispose of her body.

“We carried the corpse and buried it in a shallow grave with her handset and national identity card, and continued with our normal life, pretending as if nothing happened,” said Abubaker.

Police were alerted to the situation and discovered the murder when Elisha’s family became concerned about her whereabouts. An investigation led to the discovery of her death and the disposal of her body.

In the United States, murder is a leading cause of injury-related death for pregnant women, second to car accidents, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Live Action News has reported on multiple cases of pregnant women who have been killed by the fathers of their children, including 17-year-old Breana Rouhselang, who was stabbed in the heart by the 16-year-old father of her child in 2018, when she was six months pregnant.
