Priests for Life announces rally to combat Health and Human Services mandate

The battle against President Barack Obama and the Department of Health and Human Services continues. According to a press release from Priests for Life, a rally will be held on Friday, March 23, at noon at the Federal Hall National Memorial in Manhattan. Other rallies will take place across the country in an effort started by the Pro-Life Action League and Citizens for a Pro-Life Society.

According to the Monday press release, the rallies will protest a mandate that forces employer health plans to pay for contraceptives, sterilizations, and abortion-inducing drugs. The mandate from the Department of Health and Human Services ignores any moral or religious objections. According to Priests for Life, Catholic universities, hospitals, and not-for-profit organizations will be required to provide services that go against the teaching of the Catholic Church.

Keynote speakers at the event will include Dr. Alveda King, the director of African American Outreach for Priests for Life, as well as Janet Morana, co-founder of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, in addition to others.

Dr. Alveda King noted that the HHS “mandate is a clear violation of the First Amendment and should be rescinded on that basis.” Dr. King continued, “But beyond that, the mandate endangers women by giving them poison and calling it health care.”

Priests for Life filed a lawsuit on February 15 in Brooklyn Federal Court in an effort to block the mandate from the Department of Health and Human Services. According to Father Frank Pavone, the director of Priests for Life, “[o]urs was the first lawsuit filed subsequent to the so-called ‘accommodation’ announced by the President on February 10, hence signaling to the administration in no uncertain terms that we did not consider his ‘accommodation’ helpful at all.”

Priests for Life is an organization that encourages clergy to “preach, teach, and mobilize their people more effectively in the effot to end abortion and euthanasia.” In addition, Priests for Life also has a wider effort through a family of organizations for clergy and laypeople.
