Nurse becomes pro-life after holding 14-week-old miscarried baby

A formerly pro-abortion nurse named Jane Beville shares the story of how she became pro-life. Beville supported legal abortion, but one day she came face to face with a tiny baby boy who had been born too early to survive.

Beville describes the pivotal moment:

[I] held a little miscarried 14 week baby in my hand. It wasn’t a blob of tissue, or a clot, or an alien-looking grub. It was a little baby boy, who was kicking his legs and waving his arms and trying very, very hard to breathe. That little baby wanted so badly to live. It broke my heart.

I became pro-life in that moment of truth.

Unable to breathe air with his undeveloped lungs, the little boy died. But his brief life showed Beville how remarkably developed preborn babies are in the early second trimester. Even though this child was too young to survive, he was fully formed.

At 14 weeks, a preborn baby has arms, legs, fingers, and toes. He has a beating heart and brain waves. The preborn child responds to touch and is already right- or left-handed. The baby has his own unique fingerprints, which are different from those of any person who has ever lived. All organ systems are in place. The nurse could already tell that the child was a boy.

The Washington Post notes that 6.7 percent of all abortions take place in the 13th through the 15th week.

Abortions at this stage are usually committed by the D&E, or dilation and evacuation, method. In this type of abortion, the baby is dismembered limb from torso and extracted piece by piece with forceps. Former abortionist Dr. Anthony Levatino describes the procedure:

A second trimester D&E abortion is a blind procedure. The baby can be in any orientation or position inside the uterus. Picture yourself reaching in with the Sopher clamp and grasping anything you can. …Once you have grasped something inside, squeeze on the clamp to set the jaws and pull hard – really hard. You feel something let go and out pops a fully formed leg about 4 to 5 inches long. Reach in again and grasp whatever you can. Set the jaw and pull really hard once again and out pops an arm about the same length. Reach in again and again with that clamp and tear out the spine, intestines, heart and lungs.
