New Mexico health committee ignores need for parenting and pregnancy help

(New Mexico Alliance for Life) [On January 31], the New Mexico House Health and Human Services committee, chaired by Albuquerque Progressive, Representative Liz Thompson (D – 24, Bernalillo) tabled House Bill 180, the Parenting and Pregnancy Resource Website and Hotline bill. Despite the fact that New Mexico is in the midst of a maternal and child health crisis, progressives displayed a lack of interest in providing New Mexico families a full spectrum of health care choices. The bill was tabled by a party-line vote of 6 (Democrat) – 3 (Republican).

“I’m saddened that the pregnancy and parenting bill to expand access to much needed resources for New Mexico women and families was tabled on party-line vote,” said HB 180 sponsor Representative Jenifer Jones (R – 32, Dona Ana, Hidalgo, Luna). “As a 30 year medical professional myself, we know New Mexico is facing a health care access crisis, we should be offering more resources and options to pregnant women and families—not just elective abortions.”

HB 180 is a straightforward appropriations bill that would have provided New Mexico mothers and families with information and links to social services, financial assistance, adoption services, pregnancy and parenting information such as OBGYNs, doulas, birthing options, planning guidance, care centers, agencies, and other available public and private resources for expectant families and new parents.

“It’s shocking that the state’s reproductive hotline is promoting abortion only – including Satanic Temple religious abortions to women but we cannot offer them other choices,” said Representative Stefani Lord, (R – 22, Bernalillo, Torrance). “It’s clear that progressive democrats are only interested in promoting abortion to pregnant women and their families.”

“Today’s vote to table the Parenting and Pregnancy Resource Hotline & Website bill by New Mexico House progressives goes to show they could not care less about addressing the state’s maternal health crisis and providing choices — the only choice they care to promote is elective abortion,” said Elisa Martinez, New Mexico Alliance for Life executive director. “Follow the money, New Mexico House progressives like Liz Thompson don’t care about maternal health, nor choice; they care about supporting the abortion lobby who is funding their campaigns.”

The state’s current abortion hotline does not provide referrals for adoption agencies, crisis pregnancy centers, financial assistance, parenting information, OBGYN referrals, doulas, birthing options, care centers, or any public or private resources for expectant families and new parents.
