‘Answer to prayer’: Lack of staff leads to suspension of abortion pill distribution in Northern Ireland

The dispensing of the abortion pill has been suspended by the Western Health and Social Care Trust in Northern Ireland due to a lack of staff. According to ITV News, the trust said it can “no longer deliver early medical abortions due to staffing issues.”

“I wholeheartedly welcome the suspension and believe it is an answer to prayer,” said Democratic Unionist Party MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) Thomas Buchanan. “I will continue to pray that it will remain in suspension, unable to open again.”

It has been over a year since abortion was legalized under controversial conditions in Northern Ireland and all of the health trusts in the nation have been committing chemical abortions (the abortion pill) up to 10 weeks since then. But last week, the Western Health Trust announced that, for the time being, it will no longer be able to do so.

“The Western Health and Social Care Trust have had to temporarily pause the delivery of the Early Medical Abortion Services,” said a statement from the trust. “Referrals for this service can no longer be accepted from 5.00pm on Friday 23 April 2021 until further notice. The trust requires additional nursing and medical support in order to deliver this service and are actively exploring all options in respect to this.”

The Alliance Party, specifically MLA Paula Bradshaw, is calling on the Secretary of State to ensure that abortions are available. “The suspension of the early medical abortion service by the Western Trust merely demonstrates the failure of the health authorities to provide adequate resources towards the implementation of the law in Northern Ireland,” said Bradshaw.

The abortion pill regimen involves two drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol. As explained by former abortionist Dr. Anthony Levatino in the video below, mifepristone works to deprive the preborn child of nutrients by blocking the natural pregnancy hormone progesterone, and misoprostol causes contractions that expel the baby. The Northern Ireland Assembly was not in operation when the UK government voted to legalize elective abortion in the nation, having warned the Northern Ireland parliament that it would do so if the parliament did not reconvene before October 21, 2019. The UK government legalized abortion in Northern Ireland and put the new law into effect on March 31, 2020, allowing abortion up to birth for all disabilities and on-demand until week 12.

Despite a June 2020 vote by the Northern Ireland Assembly that passed a motion stating its opposition to the abortion law, abortion in Northern Ireland has remained legal.
