In an article from New York Magazine (August), published online today, Rebecca Traister (pictured) claims that the undercover videos released by The Center for Medical Progress will not affect public opinion, because “women already know what abortion is.”
Traister describes the “trays of aborted fetuses… severed arms and intestines… little lungs and thymus glands… crushed organs and tiny bones” visible in the videos, then immediately downplays the grisly details…
… the notion that educating women in the grotesqueries of termination will be a game-changer is absurd… We know more about blood, innards, fetuses, and the babies they may become — in short, about life in reproductive bodies — than anti-abortion activists seem to understand.
Later in the article Traister makes a startling confession:
Women know about blood. We know about discharge. We know about babies, and many of us also love them, their little feet and hands and eyelashes. And, yes, we know that those bitty features develop while the fetus is inside us.
Traister further implies that no matter how barbaric abortions actually are, people don’t care:
Planned Parenthood didn’t invent abortions, and David Daleiden isn’t going to explain them in terms so grisly as to reverse thousands of years’ of women’s needs, desires, and lived experiences.
In short, Rebecca Traister is fully aware of the humanity of the fetus, fully aware of the trays of severed arms and intestines and other clearly human body parts that result from abortion – she just doesn’t care. The article concludes with a chilling quote from pro-abortion activist Frances Kissling:
‘Abortions are yucky,’ said Kissling. ‘But after that response, there is a shrugging of the shoulders.’ After all, a lot of life is yucky.
Despite these claims, many women say that had they been informed about their child’s fetal development (those “little feet and hands and eyelashes”) or seen sonograms of their preborn children, they would have made choices for life instead of abortion.
