Monique Ruberu, a board-certified OB/GYN, debunks a common pro-abortion claim in a new video for Live Action. While abortion supporters frequently say that abortion is safer than childbirth, Ruberu explained why that claim should be highly scrutinized.
Key Takeaways:
- Abortion supporters often claim abortion is medically justified because it is ‘safer than childbirth.’
- These activists further argue that women will die without legalized abortion.
- Dr. Ruberu explained how this claim is based on faulty logic and scant research.
The Details:
In the video, Ruberu pointed out how the “abortion is safer than childbirth” claim is a scare tactic that ignores what abortion is actually like.
“Let’s take a look at what the different abortion procedures entail,” she said. “In what is known as a chemical abortion, the woman takes pills that prevent oxygen and vital nutrients from reaching the child, essentially starving him or her to death. In suction D&C and D&E abortions, the child is dismembered by way of a vacuum or forceps, respectively. And in the case of third trimester induction abortions, the baby is usually killed by injecting a substance that causes cardiac arrest into its head or heart. What differentiates various abortion procedures is the method it uses to kill the child.”
And as Ruberu pointed out, there is nothing “safe” about a procedure that always causes at least one death — that of the preborn child.
“The claim is kind of like saying if your child is sick, killing your child at home is much safer for you than driving your child to the hospital to be cured, because driving a car carries lots of risks for you,” she said. “Not driving a car is so much safer than driving a car.”
Go Deeper:
There has been one study that found abortion to be safer than childbirth, but as Ruberu pointed out, this study was based in bad science, and has never been replicated. It was also authored by two pro-abortion researchers: Elizabeth Raymond, who works for Gynuity Health Projects (which seeks to expand access to the abortion pill regimen and overturn safety standards set by the Food and Drug Administration), and abortionist David Grimes.
“Not only has the data from the study never been reproduced, but the data likely significantly underrepresents abortion morbidity and mortality for several reasons,” Ruberu explained. “Abortion reporting is not required by federal law and many states such as Washington, D.C., New York, and California are missing from the study. Deaths resulting from abortion complications may be reported as death from the complication rather than the abortion itself, so the death may not be linked to the abortion.”
She added:
Most women leave abortion clinics within hours of the procedure and go to the hospital emergency rooms if they have any major problems. The abortion facility may not even know about it. Suicide deaths are rarely, if ever, linked back to abortion in state reporting death rates. Simply put, data on death from childbirth is much more complete than data on death of mothers from abortion complications.
The Bottom Line:
Saying abortion is safer than childbirth is, quite simply, an unprovable claim.
“The claim that abortion is safer than childbirth is just another in the long list of falsehoods designed to scare people into supporting pro-abortion legislation,” Ruberu concluded. “In truth, every abortion is not only dangerous to mothers, but fatal to their children.”
