SHOCK: One-fourth of aborted children survived in one year… in one Canadian province

A disturbing report from a non-profit organization in Canada revealed that over 100 late-term abortions were committed in just one province, in one year — and roughly one-fourth of those children were born alive.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Canadian Institutes for Health Information revealed that 133 late-term abortions were committed in the country between 2023 and 2024.
  • Of those, 33 children survived the abortion attempt — which is roughly 25%.
  • This is a much higher percentage than the average in Canada, as a previous report claimed that over 11% of late-term abortions in Canada result in live births.
  • The report listed a total of 123 abortion survivors in all of Canada (excluding Quebec) during that reporting year.
  • The most common gestational age of survivors was between 21 and 24 weeks.
  • Abortion advocates have regularly insisted that abortion survivors are a “myth,” despite reports stating otherwise.

The Details:

In an op-ed for the Western Standard, Pro-Life Alberta executive director Richard Dur called attention to the disturbing report. Despite being the fourth-most populous province, behind Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia, Alberta had the third highest number of late-term abortions committed, at 105.

Ontario and British Columbia both had significantly more, but the number of abortion survivors were highest in Alberta.

While Ontario’s late-term abortion attempts saw 9% of its victims survive, in Alberta, it was a whopping 25%.

British Columbia did not report if there were any live births following late-term abortions; other provinces, like Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, and Manitoba, did report that some babies survived late-term abortions, but in much smaller numbers.

According to the report, the most common gestational age range at which babies survived in Canada was 21-24 weeks. On average, micro-preemiesborn at 22 weeks reportedly have a 28% chance of survival in the U.S.; at 23 weeks, a 55% chance of survival; at 24 weeks, a 68% chance of survival.

Dur noted in the Western Standard that any baby born before 23 weeks will not receive life-saving measures in Alberta (emphases added):

Alberta applies a cutoff: no active care, under formal Alberta Health Services policy.

Babies who survive abortion face a parallel neglect — not because of a written rule, but because current clinical practice does not require intervention.

Yet some of these babies could survive with care. In Ontario, doctors and parents decide. Globally, advances in medicine keep pushing back what’s dryly called the “age of viability” — some babies now survive when born at 21 or 22 weeks and go on to live a normal life. But not in Alberta.

By the Numbers:

Last year, several studies revealed that babies were surviving late-term abortions in Canada by double-digit percentages.

One of the most recent studies, which was published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, found that 11.2% of second-trimester abortions committed in Quebec between 1989 and 2021 resulted in live births. Out of 13,777 abortions, there were a reported 1,541 live births.

A live birth is defined as “the presence of any sign of life, including breathing, heartbeat, umbilical cord pulsation, or muscle movement, in a fetus that is removed from a mother, whether or not the cord is cut or placenta attached,” and “must be registered, regardless of gestational age, reason for birth, or length of time before death” under Quebec law.

While 25% of the babies were sent to the NICU, and 5% were given palliative care, it’s not known what happened to the rest. Some survived for as long as one day, but the average survival time was two hours. It’s impossible to know if more may have survived for longer if they had been given active care — or if they were just left to die.

The recent report from the Canadian Institutes for Health Information listed abortion survivors by province (minus Quebec) from just one year (2023-24), and noted that 123 babies survived their abortions out of 1,315 total abortions committed past 20 weeks gestation — a 9.4% survival rate.

Reality Check:

Though many abortion advocates have claimed (despite recorded evidence) that abortion survivors do not exist or are a “myth,” this is a very odd thing to deny.

Live Action News reported in 2023 that (emphases added) “Only a handful of states require cases of abortion survivors to be documented, and Live Action News found 220 cases of abortion survivors reported from 1999-2023 in just eight states. Because of a lack of consistent reporting, that number is almost certainly substantially higher.”

The Bottom Line:

While the abortion industry claims they do not exist, abortion survivors are real, even today, and in Alberta, some of those babies may be left to die.
