Sen. Ben Sasse plans to ‘force a debate’ on protecting abortion survivors

Tonight, Senator Ben Sasse plans to “force a debate on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act in the wake of Virginia Governor Ralph Northam’s comments and New York’s repeal of state-level protections for abortion survivors,” according to a press release. Sasse will reportedly “ask unanimous consent to pass” the legislation in the U.S. Senate.

Last Thursday, Sasse expressed outrage at recent extreme abortion legislation passed in New York and introduced in Virginia, which allows for children to be aborted up to birth due to a broad “health” exception which can include the emotional or “familial” health of the mother as a reason to abort at any time. Such an exception would be left to the discretion of the abortionist, who stands to make thousands of dollars from a late-term abortion.

“Everyone in this Senate ought to be able to say unequivocally that killing that little baby is wrong,” Sasse said. “I’m going to ask all 100 Senators to come to the floor and be against infanticide. This shouldn’t be complicated.” Sasse noted in his impassioned speech on Thursday:

Let’s be clear what we’re talking about. We’re talking about killing a baby that’s been born. We’re not talking about some euphemism, we’re not talking about a clump of cells. We’re talking about a little baby girl whose been born and is on a table in a hospital or a medical facility and then a decision or a debate would be had about whether or not you could kill that little baby. We’re talking about the most vulnerable among us and we have a public official in America out there again and again defending a practice. This is infanticide that we’re talking about. This should be so far beyond any political consideration. We’re talking about a little baby. A baby with dignity. An image bearer. We’re talking about a tiny life that has done nothing wrong to warrant being left to die cold and alone on a table.

The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, reads the press release, “would protect newborns that survive abortions by requiring appropriate care and admission to a hospital” and “requires that, when an abortion results in the live birth of an infant, health care practitioners must exercise the same degree of professional skill and care to protect the newborn as would be offered to any other child born alive at the same gestational age. It also requires that the living child, after appropriate care has been given, be immediately transported and admitted to a hospital. Currently federal law does not adequately protect a born child who survives an abortion.”

Sasse plans to bring up the topic for debate tonight on the Senate floor, according to his press release, after the 5:30pm (EST) vote series. Watch the Livestream here.
