Annual Texas pro-life student training a big hit with college students

Sending forth new leaders.

Texas Right to Life continues to set an example of pro-life college outreach. Recently, we brought you the inside scoop about the college training program for Texas Right to Life’s fellowship program, the Dr. Joseph Graham Fellowship for College Pro-Life Leaders, from the point of view of fellow Baileigh Poston. This week, we continue with insight from one of the dedicated program organizers Carol Glaser, who has contributed for years to perfect the program and develop it into what it is today. Describing the program, and the passion that goes into it, Carol said:

Our training allows a network of young, Pro-Life leaders to come together for a week.  Training is vital for our fellows to be successful on their campuses.  Being Pro-Life is not a popular adjective to assign to oneself and our speakers, activities, field trips, and networking allow students to transform from Pro-Life enthusiasts to passionate, Pro-Life leaders.  I have seen our students grow and mature during their few days at training.  Fellows break out of their shells and realize that any challenge on their campus can be overcome.  We provide the support; they supply the creativity and passion.

The fruit of Melissa (the program coordinator)’s and Carol’s labors is tried and true: fellows have left the summer training and gone on to found, re-establish, and lead pro-life groups on their college campuses across the state. Fellows initiate scholarship programs for pregnant and parenting students on their campuses, and establish a wide range of life-affirming programs and activities on their campuses every year.

Regardless of the specific challenge that any particular campus may face, the Fellowship training program has been successful in equipping students with the knowledge, resources, and contacts necessary to overcome any hurdle and realize a successful student pro-life organization. Valerie Lopez, a rising junior seeking a double-major in English and communication at Texas A&M International University in Laredo, said: rickandkrispeters

I’m in my second year of being a part of the Dr. Joseph Graham Fellowship. This summer’s training was honestly like “Chicken Soup” for the Pro- Life soul. I gained so much information and so much spiritually through each presentation, talk, discussion, visit, and bonding experience! TRTL does a great job of combining all elements of leadership strengthening, Pro-Life issues, and good fun into this training. Thanks to Texas Right to Life I can come back to Laredo and share what is have learned with my TAMIU and Laredo community.

The program has grown from just four student scholars to over forty in the years since its inception, and some graduates have gone on to work full- or part-time in the pro-life movement after college.
