Nation of Jersey sees increased abortions for second year in a row

The nation of Jersey, a territory of the United Kingdom (UK), has reported the highest number of abortions ever for the second year in a row, with its abortion ratio continuing to be higher than the European Union (EU) average.

Key Takeaways:

  • In 2024, 280 abortions were committed in Jersey — an increase of 20 over those committed in 2023.
  • Jersey’s abortion ratio of 390 per 1,000 is significantly higher than the EU’s 199 per 1,000.
  • The United Nations (UN) has applied consistent pressure upon countries to legalize abortion.

The Details:

Jersey recently issued its annual Abortion Report, which revealed roughly 280 abortions committed in 2024. The 260 committed in 2023 were already the highest number since 2002, when 270 were committed. But 2001 still holds the highest year on record for the nation, with 310 abortions committed that year.

Abortion is legal in Jersey for any reason through 12 weeks and six days gestation, though abortions can be committed after that period under certain circumstances.

If the abortion is considered necessary to “save the woman’s life or to prevent serious permanent injury to her physical or mental health,” it can be committed at any time throughout pregnancy. Including “mental” health creates a loophole large enough to allow abortion for practically any reason.

Abortion is also permitted through 24 weeks if “there is a serious risk that if born, the child would suffer from such physical or mental abnormalities as to have a serious disability.”

In addition to a high number of abortions, Jersey has an abortion ratio of 390 abortions per 1,000 live births — the highest in the past 25 years.

As the report noted, this is higher than the ratios of numerous EU countries as well as the EU overall.

The report specifically notes nations like “Sweden (339), Great Britain (328), the EU average (199),” and points out that Jersey’s is also “significantly higher than those for Ireland (142) and Germany (141).”

Zoom Out:

The United Nations has been increasingly pressuring countries around the globe to legalize abortion. Even as the UN warns of plummeting fertility rates, it still insists that abortion is a human right. Meanwhile, pro-life countries have fought back to protect preborn children from abortion.

A group of African nations, including Burundi, Nigeria, Egypt, and more, blocked the inclusion of “reproductive health” from a family resolution from the UN, with the Nigerian delegate firing back very strongly.

“Family is not only the natural and fundamental group unit of society, it is the building block of civilization,” she said, adding, “All UN member states have an obligation to defend the family in line with international human rights law.”

The Bottom Line:

As many countries around the world grapple with a future in which there are not enough children being born to replace population — likely to lead to economic collapse — some are trying to incentivize families to have more children.

But until the world understands the evil of abortion — recognizing that it isn’t necessary for prosperity and stability nor is it anyone’s “human right” to end the lives of innocent human beings — things are not likely to turn around anytime soon.
